Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

Down in the sub-basement control center, the air smelled of ozone and hot server racks.

Security Chief Morales lay unconscious beside the master console, a dark bruise forming along his jawline. Standing over him was corporate treasurer Daniel Cruz, his tie loosened, a manic grin stretching across his face as he tapped frantic commands into the override terminal.

“Almost there,” Daniel muttered to himself, downloading the encrypted firewall keys to a thumb drive.

With the master grid locked down, the entire thirty-eighth floor was cut off from external communication. No cellular signals could get in or out. No police could be called. Victoria Vance and her corporate syndicate had engineered the ultimate trap, believing they could eliminate the heirs, seize the trust, and forge the signatures before anyone even realized the tower was under siege.

Except Daniel had miscalculated one crucial detail.

The system wasn't entirely under his control. Mateo Salvatierra, anticipating treachery from his executive board years in advance, had built a hardwired analog fail-safe into the building’s structural blueprints—a secondary terminal known only to the head of maintenance and the bloodline heirs.

And that terminal was located directly inside the secure archive room where Dr. Garza, Camila, and baby Sofía were currently hiding.

Back in the executive office, Victoria Vance frowned as her communication earpiece crackled with static.

“Cruz, report,” Victoria hissed into her lapel mic. “Why is the grid locked?”

“The sub-basement is secure, but someone is overriding the analog circuits from the thirty-eighth-floor interior!” Daniel’s frantic voice replied over the encrypted channel. “It’s coming from the private archive vault!”

Victoria’s head snapped toward Alejandro. A cruel smile touched her lips. “Ah. So the little street rat didn't just bring a crayon list. She brought a manual on how to breach our security.”

She raised her pistol directly at Alejandro’s chest. “Drop the gun, Alejandro. Walk toward the archive door, and open it for me. Or I’ll start shooting through the walls until I hit something small and fragile.”

Alejandro’s grip on his weapon tightened. His knuckles turned white. He looked at the reflection of the hallway in the glass, calculating the distance, the angles, the speed.

He didn't have to win a gunfight. He just needed to stall long enough for the analog terminal to finish transmitting the emergency audit files to the federal securities commission.

“You’ll never get away with this, Victoria,” Alejandro said, stepping slowly forward, drawing her attention entirely onto himself. “The moment those files hit the federal server, the entire board goes down for corporate conspiracy and attempted kidnapping.”

“Let them try,” Victoria sneered, stepping closer, her finger tightening on the trigger. “Once the child is gone, there is no beneficiary to claim the trust. The board will ratify my emergency succession by sunset. Now... open the door!”

Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the archive room behind them swung open on its own.

Standing in the doorway wasn't Dr. Garza.

It was Camila.

She wasn't crying. She held a heavy, antique brass paperweight in her right hand, her eyes fixed on Victoria with the terrifying, unblinking focus of a soldier holding a ridge against impossible odds.

“Leave him alone,” Camila said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the silent office.

Victoria laughed—a sharp, dismissive sound—and swung the barrel of her pistol toward the 7-year-old girl. “A brave little martyr. How touching.”
