Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Manila EnvelopeThe morning light cut sharply across the eastern windows of the Moretti estate, illuminating the floating dust motes in the quiet breakfast room. Aleandro sat motionless in his high-backed leather chair, a cup of untouched black coffee steaming faintly beside a newspaper he had not read. His dark eyes were fixed on the doorway as Sophia Delgado approached with cautious, measured steps.

Sophia stopped three paces away, her hands trembling slightly as she extended a plain manila envelope without a name. The flap was tucked inside rather than sealed.

"Mr. Moretti," Sophia began, her voice barely louder than a whisper. "I found this while cleaning beneath your desk this morning. It was wedged near the baseboard."

Aleandro did not move immediately. He looked from Sophia’s pale, anxious face down to the unassuming paper in her hands. He knew every item that belonged in his study. He knew the precise location of every ledger, contract, and encrypted drive. A plain manila envelope left unsealed under his desk was not an oversight; it was a deliberate provocation or a careless mistake born of panic.

"Put it on the table, Sophia," he instructed quietly.

She laid it down gently, as if she feared it might detonate, and stepped back. "Is there anything else you need, sir?"

"No. Go check on Emma."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti." Sophia hurried away, her footsteps retreating down the corridor with the desperate haste of someone escaping a burning building.

When she was gone, Aleandro reached out. His long fingers slid the envelope open and tilted it forward.

Three photographs and a folded sheet of heavy cardstock slid onto the polished wood.

The first photograph showed Isabella standing in an underground parking garage on the north side of the city, handing a thick envelope of cash to a man whose face was partially obscured by a dark cap. The second photograph captured the same man entering the service corridor of the Moretti estate three nights prior using a duplicate security keycard—a keycard that only three people in the entire household possessed. The third photograph was a financial ledger page bearing Isabella’s personal signature, authorizing a massive wire transfer from a dummy corporation straight to an offshore account controlled by Dominic Valenti, Aleandro’s most vicious rival.

The cardstock was a flight itinerary. A one-way ticket to Zurich, scheduled for the morning after their wedding.

Aleandro stared at the images. There was no rage in his chest, no sudden spike of hot fury. Instead, a cold, crystalline clarity settled over his mind. For two years, he had believed Isabella was the one piece of his chaotic world that remained untainted by blood, ambition, and betrayal. He had offered her his name, his protection, and a seat at the head of a multi-billion-dollar empire.

She had used his trust as a skeleton key to let his enemies inside his house.
