Chapter 3 - The Confrontation in the Great RoomWhen Vincent pushed open the double doors of the great room, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a knife.

The rain outside had intensified into a howling gale, shaking the massive windows and casting strobing flashes of lightning across the marble floor. The six council members sat in rigid silence around the walnut table, acutely aware that a quiet civil war was being fought over the future of the empire.

Dominic stood near the fireplace, resting his left hand casually on his cane, though his posture radiated lethal readiness.

Arthur Voss was still seated, maintaining his facade of calm, though his eyes darted slightly toward the heavy oak doors as Vincent entered with Angela trailing behind like a ghost.

"What is the meaning of this?" Arthur demanded, standing up. "Are you parading terrified staff members in front of the council now, Dominic? Have you finally lost your mind completely?"

Dominic didn't answer immediately. He took two measured steps forward, testing his leg. The pain was gone. The strength was returning. With every step, his authority reasserted itself like gravity.

He stopped ten feet from Arthur and held out his hand. Vincent immediately stepped forward and slapped the printed surveillance frame and the financial audit logs into Dominic’s palm.

Dominic tossed the documents across the walnut table. They slid across the polished wood, stopping directly in front of Arthur.

"Look at it, Arthur," Dominic commanded softly.

Arthur looked down. The photograph showed the clear, unmistakable platinum signet ring sliding the key card into Angela’s hand. Beneath it lay the bank statements linking Arthur’s personal offshore accounts to the medical debt clearance for Angela’s brother.

The color drained entirely from Arthur’s face. The polished, untouchable corporate statesman vanished, leaving behind an aging, cornered conspirator.

"This... this is a fabrication," Arthur stammered, his voice cracking slightly. "Digital manipulation. Anyone can forge a ring or a bank routing number with modern AI tools. You're staging a coup against your own board, Dominic!"

"Is that right, Arthur?" Dominic asked. He turned his gaze toward the trembling physical therapist. "Angela. Look at this man. Is this the man who paid your brother's medical bills?"

Angela slowly raised her tear-stained face. She looked at Arthur Voss, her lips trembling. She pointed a shaking finger directly at him.

"Yes," she whispered. "That's him. That's Mr. Voss."

The council erupted into chaos. Two of the senior members stood up so fast their chairs crashed backward onto the marble floor.

"Arthur, is this true?" shouted Marcus Sterling, the shipping magnate. "You tried to cripple Dominic from the inside?"

"It's business!" Arthur shouted back, his composure finally shattering as he realized there was no escape. He swept his arm toward Dominic in desperation. "Look at him! He's a dinosaur! The world has moved past the era of street-level enforcers and old-school Chicago dynasties! We needed a modern CEO—someone who could take the organization public without the federal investigations hanging over our heads! I did what had to be done to save the company!"

"You didn't do it to save the company," Dominic said, his voice cutting through the shouting like a razor. "You did it because fifteen years ago, when my father passed over your branch for the leadership succession, you swore you'd take it back by any means necessary."

Dominic stepped forward, his cane slamming against the floor with a deafening crack.

"You thought because I couldn't walk for three months, I couldn't think. You thought because I was recovering, I was weak."

Arthur backed away until the edge of the walnut table pressed against his lower back. He looked around the room, but the other five council members had retreated to the far walls, staring at him with undisguised disgust and horror. In the criminal and corporate underworlds of Chicago, ambition was expected, but treason against the family was an unforgivable sin.

"Vincent," Dominic said quietly.

"Boss?"

"Escort Mr. Voss to the lower garage. Put him in the back of the transport van. He’s taking an extended trip to our facility in the northern woods until we finish auditing every single contract he’s touched in the last decade."

Arthur’s eyes went wide with sheer terror. The northern facility wasn't a corporate retreat; it was an isolated, heavily fortified holding property where secrets were extracted and loose ends were permanently tied off.

"You can't do this!" Arthur screamed as two armed guards grabbed him by the shoulders, wrenching him away from the table. "I have rights! I’m a founding partner!"

"You were a partner," Dominic corrected coldly as Arthur was dragged toward the service elevators. "Now, you're a liability."

May you like

The heavy steel doors closed with a dull thud, cutting off Arthur's frantic protests.

Silence descended upon the great room once more, save for the steady drumming of the rain against the glass.
