Chapter 4 - The Ravine of ShadowsThe east utility gate opened into a densely wooded ravine that bordered the edge of the estate. The trees groaned under the weight of the ice, their branches thrashing violently in the gale-force winds.

Clara stumbled through the deep snow, holding Lily tightly against her chest. The cold bit into her face like needles, but the terror inside her burned hotter than any frost.
Fifty yards into the tree line, three dark figures emerged from behind the snow-covered pine trees.
Marco stepped forward, a heavy tactical shotgun resting across his shoulder. Beside him stood two armed men, their faces covered by black thermal masks.
"Good girl, Clara," Marco sneered, his voice cutting through the roar of the wind. "You always were smarter than your dead husband."
"Where is Sarah?" Clara screamed over the storm, her voice cracking. "I did what you asked! Where is my sister?!"
"She's alive," Marco lied smoothly, stepping closer. "Now hand over the brat."
Lily woke up, terrified by the harsh shouting and the biting cold. She began to cry, her small arms wrapping around Clara’s neck. "Mommy! Mommy, I'm cold! Where's Mr. Nathaniel?"
"Give her to me!" Marco barked, reaching out a gloved hand to snatch the child.
Before his fingers could touch the blanket, a sound shattered the night.
It wasn't a bark. It was a demonic, earth-shaking roar that sounded like iron ripping apart.
From the darkness behind Clara, a black flash of fury erupted through the snow. Titan launched himself through the air, his one-hundred-and-sixty-pound frame slamming directly into Marco’s chest.
Marco let out a strangled scream as he was hurled backward into the snow, his shotgun flying from his grip and disappearing into a drift. Titan was on top of him instantly, his massive jaws snapping inches from Marco’s throat, tearing through heavy leather and wool like paper.
"Shoot it! Shoot the damn dog!" the second enforcer screamed, raising his silenced pistol.
BANG.
A single, high-caliber rifle shot echoed from high above the ravine. The enforcer’s chest exploded outward, and he crumpled into the snow without making a sound.
The third man panicked, spinning around to fire blindly into the trees, but before he could pull the trigger, a sleek black SUV crashed through the wooden estate perimeter fence, its high-beam headlights blinding the night.
The driver’s side door swung open.
Nathaniel Cross stepped out into the blizzard. He wore no coat—only his dark suit, his white shirt collar open at the neck, holding a heavy black suppressor-equipped firearm in his right hand.
His eyes were not human. They were flat, black pools of absolute, terrifying rage.
"Clara," Nathaniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm despite the storm raging around them. "Get behind the vehicle."
Clara didn't hesitate. She scrambled through the snow, clutching the weeping Lily, and collapsed behind the rear bumper of the SUV, where two of Nathaniel’s personal security guards immediately formed a protective wall around her with their bodies.
On the ground, Marco was bleeding profusely from his shoulder, screaming as Titan held him down with a heavy paw pressed against his throat.
Nathaniel walked slowly through the snow, his leather shoes crunching softly, until he stood over Marco. He pointed the barrel of his gun directly between the enforcer’s eyes.
"Where is Dante?" Nathaniel asked quietly.
"Go to hell, Cross!" Marco spat, blood bubbling on his lips. "He’s got her sister! He’s gonna kill her anyway! You’re too late!"
Nathaniel didn't blink. He pulled the trigger once. THWIP.
Marco went limp.
Nathaniel looked down at Titan. The dog was panting heavily, blood dripping from his muzzle, but his eyes were fixed on Nathaniel, waiting for the next command.

Nathaniel reached down, his bare hand sinking into the thick, blood-stained fur of the dog’s neck, and gently stroked his ear.
"Good boy," Nathaniel whispered softly. "Now... let's go end this."
