Chapter 6 - The Rose in the SnowSpring arrived late in Chicago, but when it finally came, it transformed the Cross estate into a kingdom of green velvet and blooming white cherry blossoms.

The heavy iron gates that had remained locked for a decade were now propped wide open, letting the warm afternoon breeze ripple across the manicured lawns.

Out near the central fountain, a long wooden dining table was set with fresh flowers, silver pitchers of lemonade, and plates of fresh pastries.

Sarah, now fully recovered and working as a private nurse in the city, was sitting on the stone bench, laughing as she chatted with Clara, who looked healthier, happier, and younger than she ever had in her life. The dark circles beneath her eyes were gone, replaced by a radiant warmth that shone through her smile.

On the lush green lawn, three-year-old Lily was running in wild circles, wearing a bright yellow sundress, her small shoes discarded in the grass.

Chasing close behind her—moving with a slow, clumsy, but infinitely patient trot—was Titan. The massive Cane Corso was wearing a oversized wreath of yellow dandelions around his thick neck, a gift Lily had spent forty-five minutes carefully weaving for him.

"Faster, Titan! Faster!" Lily giggled, her bright voice echoing across the courtyard.

Titan let out a happy, huffing bark, pretending to stumble over his own paws so the toddler could catch him and tackle his massive chest into the soft grass.

Up on the terrace, Nathaniel Cross stood leaning against the carved stone balustrade, a glass of iced tea in his hand.

He no longer wore the dark, restrictive suits of his past. Today, he wore a simple linen shirt, his dark hair catching the warm spring sunlight. The cold, impenetrable armor he had worn for twenty-one years had not been shattered by a bullet or a rival’s blade; it had simply melted away, piece by piece, under the pure, innocent warmth of a child’s laughter.

Clara walked up the stone steps of the terrace, holding two small plates of strawberry shortcake. She handed one to Nathaniel, stepping up beside him to watch her daughter play.

"You know," Clara said softly, looking out over the blooming gardens, "the estate manager said we need to order more flower seeds for the east wing garden."

"Order whatever you want, Clara," Nathaniel replied, a gentle curve touching his lips. "This is your home. Yours and Lily’s."

Clara turned to look at him, her dark eyes filled with a deep, unspoken gratitude. "We never thanked you properly, Nathaniel. For Sarah. For everything."

Nathaniel turned his head, his gray eyes soft and clear as he met her gaze. He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"You don't need to thank me, Clara," he said, his voice low and genuine. "You gave me back my soul. That’s a debt I can never fully repay."

Down on the grass, Lily let out a triumphant squeal as she finally managed to climb onto Titan’s broad, black back. The giant dog stood up with immense care, taking slow, deliberate steps across the lawn, carrying his little queen as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.

Nathaniel reached down and took Clara’s hand, resting his fingers between hers.

For the first time in his life, the silence on the Cross estate was not the silence of a graveyard or a fortress. It was the quiet, golden peace of a family that had finally come home.
