Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Valdoro EstateBy the next morning, the "Valdoro Forgery" had become the obsession of the underworld and the financial sector alike. Elena didn't sleep. She spent the hours pacing her small apartment, wondering if she had unleashed a monster or merely stopped a crime. Her grandfather had always warned her: The truth is a flame. It can light your path or burn down the house.

When she finally called the number on the gold card, she was connected directly to Adrian’s private office.

"Miss Russo," his voice echoed, crisp and commanding. "You were correct. The 'seller' was a syndicate operating out of London that had spent three years building the provenance of that deed. You didn't just stop a transfer; you stopped a hostile acquisition of a territory I actually own. You saved me a war."

"I just wanted to be honest, Mr. Valenti."

"Honesty is rare, Elena. Especially when the cost of silence is $150 million. I need someone with your eye for detail. My organization has a library of historical assets, land claims, and artifacts that need vetting. I’m being lied to by professionals every day."

"I’m a waitress, Mr. Valenti. Not an expert for the mob."

Adrian chuckled, a dark, rich sound. "You’re a woman who spotted a 160-year-old error in seconds. Don't sell yourself short. I’m sending a car for you. There is something else you need to see. Something that makes the Vane deal look like a child’s game."

Elena looked at the antique wrench her grandfather had left her—a symbol of hard work and integrity. She realized she was at a crossroads. She could go back to the restaurant and spend her life being invisible, or she could step into a world of high-stakes truth. She put on her coat. She chose the truth.
