Chapter 3 - The Library of ShadowsThe "library" Adrian had mentioned was not a room; it was an underground vault beneath a private estate in Long Island. It held centuries of history—maps, letters, and deeds that whispered secrets of empires long fallen.

"Vane was the distraction," Adrian explained as he guided her through the aisles of mahogany shelves. "The real play was the secondary document. The one I didn't bring to dinner."
He showed her a set of papers that looked far more authentic than the one he had rejected. "This claims to be the true original of the Valdoro claim. If this is real, I have a clear title to geothermal resources that could power half of the European market. If it’s fake... I’m being set up for a massive legal trap that would land me in federal prison for international fraud."
Elena stepped up to the table. She pulled out a magnifying glass, her heart racing. She felt the same thrill she had felt in the restaurant, but this time, the stakes were personal.
She looked at the ink, the texture of the vellum, the specific idiosyncrasies of the calligraphic loops. "Adrian, this isn't just a forgery. This is a copy of a real document, but modified by someone who understands 19th-century Sicilian tax law."
"Can you prove it?"
May you like
"I can," she said, her fingers tracing a faded signature. "The ink composition. It’s slightly too acidic for the period. And look at the way the 'R' is formed. It’s a style from the northern districts, not the south. The Valdoro family was strictly southern. This wasn't written by the family scribe. It was written by an interloper."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "An interloper. That explains why the records in Caltanissetta were tampered with last month. Someone is rewriting history to steal my future."
