Chapter 2 - The Inspection That Wasn't

Tessa’s mind raced as the pounding on the door intensified. Health inspector? At seven-thirty in the morning? In a residential apartment building where no inspectors ever came unless bribed?

It wasn't the city. It was Arthur’s men.

She snatched the gold signet ring from the table, shoved it deep into her jeans pocket, and rushed to the mattress. Julian’s eyes fluttered open, panic instantly flooding his small face as he tried to bolt upright.

"Shh, shh, stay down," Tessa hissed, pressing her hand gently against his chest. "Listen to me. People are looking for you. You have to be completely silent, okay?"

The boy nodded frantically, tears welling up in his dark eyes. He pulled the thickest blanket over his head, burying himself completely from view.

"Open the damn door, or we kick it in!" the voice yelled from the hall, accompanied by the heavy thud of a shoulder hitting the wood.

Tessa took a deep breath, grabbed a dirty frying pan from her makeshift kitchen counter as an absurd weapon, and marched to the door. She unlocked the deadbolt and jerked the door open.

Standing in the dim, narrow hallway were two men.

They didn't look like health inspectors. They wore identical charcoal suits, trench coats wet from the morning drizzle, and expensive leather shoes. But it was the man standing slightly behind the speaker who made Tessa’s blood run cold.

He was tall, impeccably dressed, with silver-streaked hair combed back from a sharp, aristocratic face. His eyes were pale, calculating, and entirely devoid of warmth.

Arthur Moretti.

"Miss Hayes, I presume?" Arthur asked smoothly, his voice like crushed ice. He didn't wait for an invitation; he stepped directly across the threshold, invading her small space with an overwhelming aura of menace. The two enforcers followed closely behind, their eyes sweeping every corner of the room.

Tessa forced her hands to stop shaking, tightening her grip on the handle of the frying pan hidden behind her leg. "You can't just barge in here. I'm calling the police."

Arthur offered a thin, razor-sharp smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Please, go ahead. In fact, let me save you the trouble." He signaled to the burly enforcer behind him, who casually kicked the landline phone cord right out of the wall.

"What do you want?" Tessa demanded, stepping defensively in front of the mattress where Julian lay hidden beneath the blankets.

Arthur’s gaze flicked down to her posture, noting the protective angle of her body. A flicker of cold amusement crossed his features. He walked slowly around the tiny room, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply against the linoleum floor.

"A missing child, Miss Hayes," Arthur said softly, stopping near the edge of the kitchen counter. "A very tragic accident happened a few nights ago. My brother, Silas, is devastated. He believes his son perished in the flames. But my sources—ah, security cameras are marvelous things these days—suggest that someone picked up a stray dog in the alley behind Ali’s Diner last night. And since you were working the late shift..."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Tessa lied, her voice steady despite the sweat beading on her neck. "I found a stray cat. Big deal. People dump animals all the time."

Arthur turned slowly to face her. He took two steps closer, towering over her. The smell of expensive cologne and damp wool washed over her senses.

"A cat," Arthur repeated, his tone dripping with sarcasm. He looked down at the floor, spotting a small drop of dried blood near the edge of the mattress where Julian’s nose had bled the night before.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed. He took another step toward the bed.

"You're playing a very dangerous game, young lady," Arthur whispered, his hand sliding slowly inside his heavy wool coat, hovering near a concealed shoulder holster. "You have no idea what forces you're meddling with. Hand over the boy, and I ensure you walk away with enough cash to buy this entire building. Refuse, and they won't even find your teeth in the river."

Tessa’s heart hammered so hard she felt dizzy. She knew she couldn't fight two armed enforcers. If Arthur pulled his gun, she and Julian would both be dead in seconds.

She needed a distraction. Something massive.

As Arthur took another definitive step toward the mattress, reaching out to pull the blanket back, Tessa lunged forward.

Instead of swinging the frying pan, she slammed her elbow directly into the hot grease trap of her portable electric stove, intentionally tipping a pan of old cooking oil across the hot burner.

FWOOSH.

Thick, black, choking smoke erupted instantly, filling the tiny room in a matter of seconds. The smoke detector shrieked with a deafening, high-pitched alarm.

"What the hell?!" the enforcer roared, coughing violently as smoke blinded him.

"Fire! Get out!" Tessa screamed at the top of her lungs, grabbing a wet towel and throwing it over the burner while kicking a stack of metal pots directly into Arthur’s path.

Arthur cursed loudly, stumbling backward as the pots clattered against his shins. In the chaos of smoke, noise, and blinding panic, Tessa didn't hesitate. She grabbed the blanket-wrapped bundle from the bed, hoisted Julian over her shoulder, and kicked open the bathroom window that led out onto the building's rusty fire escape.

"After them!" Arthur yelled through a coughing fit.

Tessa leaped out into the pouring rain, the iron stairs groaning beneath her weight as she bolted down toward the alley, plunging headfirst into the underworld war she had desperately tried to avoid.
