Chapter 6 - The Final Detail

The boardroom on the top floor of Moretti Holdings was dead silent.
Outside, the first light of dawn broke over Lake Michigan, illuminating the polished mahogany conference table where Arthur Moretti sat at the head, surrounded by senior capos and loyalists. He wore a crisp, expensive Italian suit, looking every bit the triumphant successor preparing to take full control of the syndicate.
"As you all know," Arthur began, his voice echoing in the tense room, "the tragic loss of my brother and his son has left a vacuum in our leadership. Effective immediately—"
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a deafening crash.
Arthur stopped mid-sentence.
Silas Moretti walked into the room.
He walked slowly, his posture straight, his expression an absolute mask of icy calm. Behind him stood a dozen heavily armed loyal guards, blocking every exit. And walking right beside Silas, holding his hand proudly, was Julian.
Arthur’s face drained of all color. His jaw dropped, and for the first time in his life, the calculating corporate predator looked like a trapped animal.
"A... Arthur stammered, scrambling to his feet. "Silas... you're... how...?"
"Surprised, brother?" Silas asked, his voice dangerously smooth as he walked slowly toward the head of the table. "You thought you buried us both in that wreckage on the expressway. You thought you could inherit the throne by spilling blood that shared our name."
"It's a lie!" Arthur shouted, panic creeping into his voice as he looked around the room at the capos, whose expressions had turned cold and hostile. "That's an imposter! Some street kid Silas found to steal the company!"
Silas stopped just two feet away from his brother. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't pull a weapon.
Instead, Silas slowly looked down toward the floor.
He stared directly at Arthur’s feet.
At Arthur’s expensive, handmade Italian leather shoes.
There, caked into the intricate stitching along the welt of the left shoe, was a thick smudge of reddish-brown clay mixed with motor oil and crushed gravel.
"You know, Arthur," Silas said quietly, his eyes rising back to meet his brother's terrified gaze. "You always were meticulous about your appearance. You never wore the same pair of shoes twice. But you forgot one detail."
Arthur swallowed hard, looking down at his own shoes in sheer horror.
"That specific red clay," Silas continued, his tone chillingly level, "only exists on the private excavation site in Cicero where your men dumped the burned SUV after the crash. My forensics team pulled soil samples from the wreckage yesterday. And those exact samples are currently drying on the soles of your designer shoes."
The silence in the boardroom was absolute.
Arthur opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He looked around the table, seeking allies among the capos, but every single man had lowered his eyes in disgust. In the underworld, betrayal of blood was the ultimate sin.
Silas didn't blink. He raised his hand and gave a single, imperceptible nod.
Two guards stepped forward, grabbing Arthur by the shoulders and ripping him out of his chair before he could even draw the weapon hidden inside his jacket.
"Take him down to the docks," Silas ordered coldly. "And make sure he understands what happens to people who touch my family."
As Arthur was dragged screaming from the room, Silas turned around, kneeling down to pick up Julian and swing him effortlessly onto his shoulders.
Then, Silas looked across the room toward the doorway, where Tessa stood quietly, watching the empire reset its foundation.
Silas walked over to her, his expression softening into a look of genuine, profound gratitude.
"You saved my son's life, Miss Hayes," Silas said, extending a hand. "And in this family, debts are always paid in full."
Tessa looked at his hand, then down at Julian, who smiled brightly from his perch on his father's shoulders. The nightmare was over. The wolves had torn down their own corrupt king, and for the first time in her life, Tessa didn't have to look over her shoulder anymore.

She smiled, shaking Silas Moretti's hand with a steady, unbreakable grip.
"Just call me square, Mr. Moretti," Tessa said softly. "Just call me square."
