Chapter 4 - The Digital Siege

The rain began to fall just as midnight approached, washing the neon-lit asphalt of downtown Springfield in a greasy, shimmering film of water.
We sat parked in a nondescript gray sedan two blocks away from the towering glass-and-steel monolith of the municipal courthouse. Inside the car, the dashboard illuminated our faces with the cold blue light of our terminal screens.
According to Vanessa’s real-time location tracker—embedded in the phone Daniel thought she was using alone—he was currently on the thirty-second floor inside DA Vance’s private executive suite, reviewing the final draft of the fraudulent federal indictment that would brand me as the mastermind behind a multi-million-dollar money laundering ring.
“We have a twelve-minute window,” I said, checking my watch. “The courthouse security guards rotate their perimeter patrols every twenty minutes. The basement fiber-optic junction box is our entry point.”
Vanessa adjusted the collar of her dark trench coat, her expression hardened into a mask of cold determination. Whatever her past sins might have been, she knew that if Daniel succeeded tonight, her name would be next on his executioner’s list.
“Let’s move,” she said.
We slipped out of the car into the cold, pelting rain, moving with practiced stealth toward the service entrance of the municipal building. Using my old federal override credentials, the biometric security lock on the basement maintenance door accepted our entry code with a soft, green chime.
Inside the subterranean server room, rows of black server racks hummed with the rhythmic flashing of green and amber LED lights.
I connected my master terminal directly into the primary municipal mainframe, bypassing the firewall with a series of complex decryption scripts that took advantage of an unpatched legacy vulnerability in the city’s emergency communication grid.
“There,” I whispered, as a massive cascading waterfall of data began scrolling down my screen. “Bank records, offshore routing logs, encrypted voice recordings of DA Vance negotiating payoffs with Daniel’s cartel associates, and the signed draft of the false indictment against me.”
“Can we upload it directly to the federal attorney general’s secure intake portal?” Vanessa asked, typing furiously on her own terminal to mirror the data stream.
“We aren't just uploading it to the Attorney General,” I said, a grim smile touching my lips. “We’re broadcasting it directly to every major news network, financial wire service, and federal investigative desk in the country on an automated, un-deletable loop.”
Suddenly, the red alarm light on the server rack above us began to flash violently.
Warning: Unauthorized Administrative Override Detected. Terminal Location: Basement Junction 04.
“They know we’re here,” Vanessa gasped, looking toward the heavy steel access door at the end of the hall. Heavy footsteps were echoing down the concrete corridor—security guards, alerted by the system firewall trip.

“Download complete,” my screen flashed green: 100% Transferred.
“Run!” I shouted, grabbing the terminal just as the heavy metal door burst open, revealing two armed courthouse security officers and—to my absolute lack of surprise—Daniel himself, breathless and furious, standing behind them with a heavy iron wrench in his hand.
