Chapter 5 - The Penthouse Trap

“Stop right there!” Daniel roared, his face twisted into a mask of psychotic rage as he lunged into the server room.

Vanessa reacted with blinding speed. She grabbed a portable carbon dioxide fire extinguisher from the wall mount, pulled the pin, and blasted a dense, freezing cloud of white gas directly into the faces of the advancing security guards.

The guards coughed, stumbled, and crashed backward into the metal racks.

“Move, Evelyn!” Vanessa yelled, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward the emergency stairwell exit at the back of the server room.

We hit the stairwell, our boots pounding against the concrete steps as we sprinted upward toward the roof access door, while Daniel’s furious shouts echoed up the hollow concrete shaft behind us.

“You can’t escape, Evelyn!” Daniel screamed from somewhere below us. “The entire police department is looking for you! You’re finished!”

We burst out onto the flat, rain-slicked roof of the municipal building. The wind howled around us, carrying the heavy scent of ozone and city exhaust. Above us, the dark, roiling clouds hung low over the Springfield skyline.

We reached the edge of the roof—and stopped dead in our tracks.

There was nowhere else to go. A hundred-foot drop separated us from the alleyway below.

Footsteps slammed against the roof access door, and Daniel stepped out into the rain, holding a heavy-caliber semi-automatic pistol in his right hand, his tuxedo jacket soaked through, his dark hair plastered across his forehead.

Behind him stepped District Attorney Vance, looking pale and sweating profusely despite the freezing rain.

“End of the line, ladies,” Daniel panted, raising the pistol and pointing it directly at my chest. His eyes were wide, manic, and unhinged. “You really thought you could outsmart me, Evelyn? After twelve years of living off my success, you thought you could walk away with everything I built?”

I didn't cower. I didn't step back. I stood tall in the pouring rain, looking straight down the barrel of Daniel’s gun with absolute, freezing calm.

“You never built anything, Daniel,” I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the howling wind. “You were just a parasite feeding on my credentials, my security clearance, and my father’s old banking contacts. And right now, while you’re standing here waving a gun on a rooftop, every federal prosecutor and national news outlet in the country is downloading the unredacted ledger of your entire criminal empire.”

Daniel laughed, though a flicker of genuine panic crossed his eyes. “You’re bluffing. Nobody received anything. The firewall blocked—!”

At that exact moment, the night sky above downtown Springfield erupted into a surreal spectacle.

Across the sprawling facades of the financial district skyscrapers, massive digital billboards—normally reserved for luxury car advertisements and stock market indices—flickered simultaneously. In letters ten feet tall, bright red text blazed against the dark rain:

FEDERAL INDICTMENT: THE CARTER-VANCE CORRUPTION SYNDICATE EXPOSED. ASSETS FROZEN. ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED.

Beneath the headline, audio clips of DA Vance and Daniel negotiating bribe payouts began playing through the massive public address speaker systems across the municipal plaza below.

Vance went completely white, clutching his chest as he stared up at the giant billboard displaying his own voice confessing to extortion.

“No...” Daniel whispered, lowering the gun by a fraction of an inch as his phone began vibrating frantically in his pocket with dozens of missed calls from his bankers, his cartel associates, and his defense attorneys. “No, that’s impossible...!”

The heavy thrum of rotating helicopter blades suddenly shook the air above us.

Three matte-black federal tactical helicopters swept out from behind the cloud cover, their blinding searchlights locking directly onto the rooftop, illuminating Daniel, Vance, and us in a blinding white glare.

Through the roaring wind, a bullhorn from the lead helicopter boomed across the plaza:

“Daniel Carter and District Attorney Vance! Drop your weapons! You are federal prisoners of the United States government!”
