Chapter 5 - The Reception and the ScandalThe reception took place at a grand country club overlooking the hills of Austin.

The ballroom was decorated with white roses, hanging crystal chandeliers, and warm golden lighting. Over two hundred guests enjoyed imported wine, a seven-course dinner, and a live ten-piece band playing romantic swing jazz.

Madison had kept her uniform jacket on for the first hour, receiving endless compliments from Ethan’s family, base officers who had driven up from San Antonio, and distinguished guests.

In the corner of the ballroom, sitting at table twenty-four near the kitchen doors—the absolute furthest table from the head platform—sat Frank, Carol, and Tyler.

Nobody came over to speak to them.

When Aunt Beatrice walked past their table, she looked at Frank with disgust, shaking her head. "Frank Bennett, I’ve known you for fifty years, but what you three did to that girl last night is the most pathetic thing I’ve ever heard of. You should be ashamed to call yourselves her parents."

"Beatrice, you don't understand the whole story—" Carol began to plead.

"I understand enough," Beatrice snapped, walking away to join the dance floor.

At 8:30 PM, Ethan’s father, Richard, stood up at the head table to deliver the toast. He tapped his champagne glass with a silver spoon, bringing the large room to a quiet hush.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard said, holding his glass high. "When my son Ethan told me he was marrying an Air Force Captain, I knew he was marrying an extraordinary woman. But today... today I saw what true courage looks like."

Richard looked over at Madison, his eyes filled with immense respect.

"Some people think family is defined by a last name," Richard continued, his voice carrying effortlessly across the speakers. "But family is defined by respect, protection, and honor. Today, Madison walked down that aisle in her uniform because her strength could not be shredded by small-minded envy. Madison, welcome to our family. In this family, your wings will always be celebrated."

The ballroom erupted into loud cheers and toast clinks.

Frank couldn't take it anymore.

He slammed his napkin onto table twenty-four, stood up, and marched across the floor toward the head table, his face twisted in red-hot, humiliated rage. Carol and Tyler tried to grab his sleeve, but he shoved them aside.

"That's enough!" Frank shouted, stopping ten feet from the head table, drawing the attention of the entire room. "That is enough! You've had your fun, Madison! You humiliated me in front of my relatives! You made your mother cry! You dressed like a soldier at your own wedding just to spit in my face!"

The music cut out instantly. Two base officers standing near the bar stepped forward, their hands resting on their belts, but Madison raised her hand, stopping them.

Madison stood up slowly from her chair. She walked around the head table until she was standing three feet from her father.

"I didn't spit in your face, Frank," Madison said softly, her voice ice-cold. "You set fire to your own house last night when you took those shears to my dresses."

"You were always an ungrateful, arrogant brat!" Frank yelled, his voice cracking. "I raised you! I fed you! And you act like you're better than us because you fly planes!"

"You didn't raise me, Frank," Madison replied, stepping closer until her silver wings were inches from his suit lapel. "You tolerated me until I refused to be weak. You loved Tyler because he never challenged your fragile ego. But you hated me because I built a life that didn't require your permission."

She pulled a small white envelope from her blazer pocket and slid it into Frank's front coat pocket.

"What is this?" Frank stammered, frowning.

"That is an itemized invoice for twenty-four thousand dollars," Madison stated clearly, so every guest in the room could hear. "The exact value of the four custom wedding dresses you and Tyler destroyed in my room last night at 2:00 AM."

Gasping outbreaks filled the ballroom.

"And if that invoice is not paid in full to my attorney within thirty days," Madison added, her dark eyes flashing with absolute executioner's resolve, "the San Antonio Police Department will execute the felony criminal mischief report I filed this morning before I left your house."

May you like

Frank froze. His eyes dilated in pure, paralyzed horror. "You... you called the police on your own father?"

"I called the police on three criminals who broke into my room," Madison whispered. "Now take your wife, take your son, and get out of my wedding."
