Chapter 3 - The Counter-Strike

By six o'clock the following morning, the news of the tournament scandal had broken across every major financial news network in the country.

“Billionaire Victoria Vance Implicated in 13-Year Frame-Up Scheme.” “Holloway Twins Shatter Tournament Records While Unmasking Corporate Fraud.”

I didn't go back to the Paradise Valley mansion I shared with Victoria. I spent the night at a private hotel downtown, sitting with my personal legal counsel, Marcus Sterling, and two independent forensic accountants.

At 7:30 AM, my phone rang. Victoria’s name flashed across the screen. I put it on speakerphone.

"Julian, you coward!" her voice screamed through the speaker, ragged and breathless. "Where are you?! The board of Vance Holdings just called an emergency meeting! The shares are down fourteen percent in pre-market trading!"

"Good," I said calmly, taking a sip of black coffee. "They should be down lower."

"Are you insane?!" she shrieked. "Our prenuptial agreement ties forty percent of your logistics company's liquidity to my family's trust! If I go down, you go down with me! I will ruin you, Julian! I'll take every warehouse, every truck, and every patent you own!"

"Check your email, Victoria," Marcus Vance spoke up from across the glass table.

A pause echoed over the line, followed by the faint rustle of papers and aggressive typing.

"What is this...?" Victoria’s voice suddenly lost its screeching rage, dropping into a hollow, terrified whisper.

"That is a formal filing for an annulment based on fraud, material misrepresentation, and criminal conspiracy," Marcus explained cleanly. "Along with an emergency injunction freezing all joint accounts under the Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act."

"You can't do this!" she whimpered. "Julian, we've been married for twelve years! I loved you! I gave you a family! I raised Preston with you!"

"You didn't give me a family, Victoria," I said, my voice ice-cold. "You built a cage out of lies and trapped me inside it. And as for Preston... I had his blood tested three months ago when I noticed the corporate funds missing from his trust. He isn't my son, and he isn't the son of your late ex-husband either. He's Dr. Richard Vance's biological child."

The phone line went dead silence.

She didn't deny it. She couldn't.

I hung up the phone and pushed it away.

Two hours later, I pulled up to a modest, beautiful two-story craftsman house in the quiet suburbs of North Scottsdale. The lawn was neatly kept, and a couple of bicycles sat parked near the garage.

I stepped up to the porch, my heart hammering against my ribs harder than it had during any multi-million-dollar corporate negotiation. I knocked on the door.

The door opened, and Elena stood there, wearing an apron, holding a wooden spoon. The smell of fresh pancakes and coffee drifted out from the kitchen.

"You're early," she said softly, though there was no anger in her voice.

"I couldn't wait," I admitted, standing on the threshold. "I brought the court filings. The injunction against Victoria has been approved. She won't be able to touch your firm or your family ever again."

Elena looked at the thick manila folder in my hand, then looked up at my exhausted, dark-circled eyes.

"Come inside, Julian," she said gently, stepping aside. "The boys are in the kitchen."
