Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Vance

The final collapse of Victoria Vance’s empire was swift, merciless, and televised.

Three weeks after the tournament, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in coordination with the State Attorney General, raided the corporate headquarters of Vance Holdings.

Dr. Richard Vance, facing twenty years in federal prison for medical malpractice, wire fraud, and illegal surveillance, turned state's evidence against Victoria. He provided audio recordings from 2013 where Victoria explicitly outlined the plan to frame Elena, bribe local judges, and falsify paternity documents.

I stood near the marble steps of the Maricopa County Superior Court as the police officers led Victoria out in handcuffs.

She was dressed in a dark gray prison jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her face stripped of the expensive cosmetics that had hidden her malice for so long. Preston stood near the curb with a legal team, looking bewildered, broke, and abandoned by the high-society friends who had vanished the moment the news broke.

As Victoria was guided toward the transport van, she saw me standing near the steps.

"Julian!" she screamed, her voice hoarse and desperate. "Julian, please! Talk to the prosecutor! Tell them it was a mistake! I did it for us! I did it because I loved you!"

I looked at her, standing tall beside Marcus Sterling.

"You didn't do it because you loved me, Victoria," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the crisp morning air. "You did it because you were afraid of anyone who was truly brilliant, honest, and pure. You wanted a trophy, not a family."

"You'll never be happy without me!" she shrieked as the officer placed a hand on her head and pushed her into the back of the van. "You ruined everything!"

The heavy steel doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice forever.

I turned my back on the courthouse and walked away into the bright Arizona sunlight.
