Chapter 5 - The Trial of BloodThe medical wing of the Moretti estate in Manhattan was equipped like a top-tier surgical suite.

For three days following the night on Long Island, Lorenzo remained under heavy sedation following surgery to repair his shoulder. During those three days, Sophia never left his side. She worked from a small desk in his private recovery room, meticulously reviewing every legal document, land charter, and financial asset owned by the Moretti family, systematically purging every fraudulent clause Matteo and his co-conspirators had planted over the past decade.
On the fourth morning, the heavy curtains were drawn back, allowing the bright morning sunlight to flood the room.
Lorenzo stirred, opening his dark eyes. The first thing he saw was Sophia, fast asleep in a chair beside his bed, her head resting on the edge of his mattress, her hand still holding his.
A soft, profound warmth filled Lorenzo’s chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced in thirty years. He carefully moved his right hand, his fingers gently stroking her dark hair.
Sophia stirred, opening her eyes instantly. When she saw him awake and lucid, a brilliant, breathtaking smile lit up her face.
"You're awake," she whispered, sitting up quickly. "How do you feel? Do you need the doctor?"
"I need you to stop worrying," Lorenzo said, his voice raspy but strong. He sat up slowly, leaning against the pillows. "What happened to Matteo and the Donati representatives?"
"Marco handled it," Sophia explained quietly. "Matteo and his primary associates have been permanently banished from New York, their assets seized, and their influence eradicated. The Donati family signed a total non-aggression pact after I showed their legal team proof that we possessed evidence of their international tax fraud schemes."
Lorenzo chuckled, a deep, rich sound that made Sophia’s heart swell. "You dismantled an international crime syndicate from a hospital chair?"
"I had good motivation," she said softly, looking down at her hands.
Lorenzo reached out, taking her hand in his, pulling her gently until she was sitting on the edge of his bed.
"Sophia," Lorenzo said, his tone turning serious, filled with a deep, unshakeable sincerity. "When you stopped me from signing that paper at Loro, I thought you were just a clever girl who knew a rare dialect. But over these past months, you have transformed my world."
"Lorenzo..."
"I have spent my entire life surrounded by men who pretend to be loyal while waiting for a chance to stab me in the back," Lorenzo continued, looking deep into her hazel eyes. "You came into my life with nothing to gain, risked everything to save my empire, and stood in front of a gun for me. You are the most brilliant, brave, and extraordinary woman I have ever met."
Sophia felt tears pricking her eyes, her heart beating a frantic, joyful rhythm against her ribs. "I did it because I couldn't bear the thought of anything happening to you, Lorenzo. I love you."
Lorenzo’s dark eyes flared with raw passion. He pulled her close with his right arm, bringing his lips down to meet hers in a deep, passionate, long-overdue kiss.
The kiss was everything she had dreamed of—warm, intense, possessive, yet filled with an undeniable tenderness that promised safety and devotion. Sophia wrapped her arms gently around his neck, sinking into his warmth, knowing with absolute certainty that she had finally found where she belonged.
When they finally parted, both panting softly, Lorenzo rested his forehead against hers.
"No more secrets, Sophia," Lorenzo whispered softly against her lips. "No more shadows. You are no longer my analyst."
"Oh?" Sophia smiled teasingly. "Am I fired?"

Lorenzo smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that transformed his ruthless face into something breathtakingly handsome.
"You are being promoted," Lorenzo said gently. "To the only position that truly matters in this city."
