Chapter 3 - The Destruction of Miller HoldingsBy sunrise, the financial columns of the Chicago Tribune and the digital feeds of the city’s business journals were exploding with catastrophic headlines.

MILLER REAL ESTATE HOLDINGS HALTED AMID FEDERAL PROBE. DEVELOPER DAVID MILLER FACES EMERGENCY LIQUIDATION.

Inside the glass-walled conference room of Miller Holdings on LaSalle Street, David Miller looked like a man who had aged ten years overnight. His shirt was rumpled, his hair disheveled, and his phone buzzed continuously with frantic calls from banks, investors, and municipal zoning boards.

Within twelve hours, Julian Moretti’s holding companies had bought up every single note, mortgage, and bad debt David had accumulated in the South Loop. The commercial properties were frozen. The bank accounts were seized under emergency receivership.

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

Julian Moretti walked in. He wore a crisp charcoal suit, his silver-threaded hair neat, his expression completely devoid of mercy. Behind him stood two federal prosecutors and three of Julian’s senior enforcers.

“You!” David shrieked, stumbling backward until his legs hit the edge of the mahogany conference table. “You did this! You ruined my company! You orchestrated a hostile takeover using mob capital!”

“It wasn't a hostile takeover, David,” Julian said smoothly, walking to the head of the table and sitting down in the owner’s chair. “It was an eviction.”

“Where is Clarion?!” David raged, his voice cracking with desperation. “If you’ve touched her, I’ll go to the feds! I’ll give them everything on your South Loop operations!”

Julian chuckled softly—a cold, dry sound.

“The feds are already here, David,” Julian said, motioning to the prosecutors behind him. “Allow me to introduce Assistant United States Attorney Vance. He’s been investigating your offshore embezzlement accounts and the forged signature on your father-in-law’s estate transfer for fourteen months.”

Attorney Vance stepped forward, flashing a badge and slapping a thick set of federal indictments onto the table.

“David Miller, you are under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, extortion, and interstate racketeering,” Vance announced clearly.

As the cold steel handcuffs clicked around David’s wrists, he stared across the room with wild, uncomprehending eyes. He had spent three years believing he was the apex predator of Chicago, only to realize he had been nothing more than a mouse playing in a lion's den.
