Chapter 6 - The True SanctuaryThe confrontation in the north service corridor lasted less than three minutes.

Marcus Vance and his two mercenaries made it as high as the thirty-ninth floor before Julian’s security teams intercepted them. But Marcus, desperate and unhinged, broke away from his men and managed to force his way through the service stairwell door into the private foyer of the penthouse.
He raised a pistol, panting heavily, his eyes wild with adrenaline.
Then he stopped.
Standing in the center of the foyer, bathed in the soft light of the crystal chandelier, was Clarion. She held the revolver steady, her arms locked, her aim trained directly on his chest.
Behind her stood Julian, hands relaxed in his pockets, watching with the absolute calm of a man who knew his wife didn't need rescuing.
“You!” Marcus snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger. “You’re the reason everything crashed down! If I’m going down, I’m taking you with—!”
Click.
Marcus pulled the trigger.
Nothing happened.
The safety was still on his own weapon, or the magazine was jammed. In that split second of hesitation, Julian moved. He closed the distance like a striking panther, disarming Marcus with a brutal, efficient twist of his wrist, and slammed the disgraced councilman against the reinforced glass wall.
Marcus slid down the glass, unconscious before he hit the floor.
Dante and two guards appeared immediately, dragging the intruder away into the stairwell.
The penthouse fell completely silent once more.
Clarion lowered the revolver, her hands shaking slightly as the adrenaline receded. She exhaled a long, shuddering breath.
Julian stepped up behind her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, burying his face in the crook of her neck.
“You were magnificent,” he murmured against her skin.
“I was terrified,” she admitted, leaning back into his strength.
“So was I,” Julian confessed quietly—an admission he would never make to anyone else in the world. “Because for the first time in my life, I had something I couldn't bear the thought of losing.”
Clarion turned in his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck. The ghosts of the Gold Coast penthouse—the broken teacup, the blood on the marble, the years of silent suffering—were all gone, washed away by the tide of a love that was forged in fire.
