PART 2 — The Separation of Assets

The private terminal at the city’s international airport was entirely silent, save for the hum of the air conditioning and the tapping of my fingers against the keyboard of my encrypted laptop. I had changed out of the ruined gala dress into a sharp, charcoal-grey pantsuit. Sitting opposite me, looking completely disheveled and exhausted, was Dr. Alan Vance, Adrian's cousin and the lead corporate attorney for the Vance Group.
He hadn't been at the gala, but he had been woken up at 2:00 AM when the international banks froze every single corporate account associated with his family’s holdings.
"Evelyn, please," Alan begged, his hands shaking as he slid a thick folder of financial summaries across the glass table. "Adrian is an idiot. We all know he’s a spoiled, arrogant brat who has never had to face consequences. But the Vance Group employs four thousand people in this city. If your father keeps the credit freeze active for another twelve hours, our suppliers will file for bankruptcy, and the entire hotel chain will collapse into federal receivership."
I didn't look up from my screen, where I was actively monitoring the real-time short-selling of Vance Group stock. "Adrian didn't act alone, Alan. For six years, his mother Lenora reminded me every single day that I was a 'nobody.' She systematically altered the foundation's bylaws to funnel charitable donations meant for children's hospitals into Celeste Arden's private offshore accounts. They didn't just abuse me; they robbed the city."
"We will return every dollar," Alan promised, his voice cracking. "I have already drafted the resignation papers for Adrian and Lenora. The Board of Directors is ready to strip them of their voting shares and hand full executive control of the foundation over to you. Just tell your father to stop the short-selling."
"It's too late for a peaceful transition, Alan," I said, finally shutting my laptop with a definitive click. "Before I was Adrian's wife, I spent years studying forensic accounting. I didn't just call my father because I was struck; I called him because the audit was complete. Look at the third page of your own folder."
Alan frowned, his fingers trembling as he flipped through the pages until he reached the document I had flagged. His face instantly drained of all color.
"This... this is an international money laundering trail," Alan whispered, his eyes wide with horror as he stared at the routing numbers. "Celeste Arden’s 'charity consulting' firm wasn't just a front for an affair. She’s been washing funds for a private private military contractor operating out of Eastern Europe. And Adrian signed the authorization forms."
"Adrian thought he was hiding an affair from a naive wife," I said, leaning forward, my gaze cold and absolute. "But he was actually providing a domestic banking cover for a major federal crime. My father’s security companies have been tracking this exact syndicate for two years. Adrian didn't just hit a helpless woman tonight, Alan. He handed the federal government the golden key to destroy his own family."
The door to the private lounge opened, and two federal agents in dark suits stepped inside, followed by Sarah Lin, the chief investigator for the Calder Group. Sarah dropped a fresh stack of arrest warrants onto the table.
"The district attorney just signed the warrants, Evelyn," Sarah announced, a professional, cold satisfaction in her voice. "Adrian and Celeste were picked up twenty minutes ago at a private residence near the marina. They were trying to board a yacht registered to Celeste's shell company. Lenora is currently confined to her penthouse, surrounded by federal marshals. They’re being charged with grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy to violate international banking regulations."

Alan sank back into his chair, covering his face with his hands. "It's over. The Vance name is dead."
"The Vance name was built on a foundation of cards and cruelty, Alan," I said, standing up and picking up my briefcase. "You’re a good lawyer, and you had no part in this. If you want to save the four thousand employees who work for your hotels, you will cooperate fully with the DA. Otherwise, you can join your cousin in a federal holding cell."
