PART 3 — The Interrogation of the Arrogant

The federal detention facility was a grey, concrete structure that felt entirely removed from the glittering ballrooms of high society. I sat behind a double-sided mirror in Interrogation Room 4B, watching Adrian Vance pace the small room like a caged animal. He had been stripped of his custom tuxedo, now wearing a standard-issue orange jumpsuit that made his pale, soft skin look washed out under the harsh fluorescent lights.
Beside me stood Roman Calder, his arms crossed over his chest, his presence commanding the small observation room.
"He still doesn't understand the magnitude of his situation," Roman said, his voice low and dangerous. "He thinks his family's political connections will save him. He doesn't realize I bought the contracts of his lawyers three hours ago."
"Let me speak to him, Daddy," I said, looking at my reflection in the mirror. "He needs to hear it from the 'quiet scholarship student' he thought he owned."
Roman nodded, signaling the guard at the door. "Two of my personal security operators will remain inside the room, Evelyn. If he even shifts his weight toward you, they will neutralize him."
I stepped through the heavy steel door into the interrogation room. The sharp, mechanical click of the lock behind me made Adrian spin around. When he saw me, his face twisted into a mixture of lingering arrogance and intense, desperate rage.
"Evelyn!" he yelled, lunging toward the table before the two tactical guards instantly grabbed his shoulders, slamming him back into his chair with enough force to rattle the metal frame. "Tell these people to let me go! Your father is insane! He can't do this to me! My family funds the political campaigns of half the lawmakers in this state! This whole setup is an illegal kidnapping!"
I calmly sat down across from him, placing a thin, red folder on the steel table. I didn't look angry; I looked entirely bored, which seemed to infuriate him even more.
"The lawmakers you fund received a full copy of Celeste's offshore ledgers at 3:00 AM, Adrian," I said, opening the folder to reveal the forged signatures on the foundation accounts. "As of ten minutes ago, every single one of them has publicly returned your donations and released statements condemning your 'corrupt corporate practices.' You are political radioactive waste."
"You did this," he hissed, his teeth clenched, his eyes burning with the same venom he had shown right before he struck me at the gala. "You played the victim for six years. You let my mother treat you like a servant. You sat there and watched me spend millions on Celeste, and you never said a word. You're a monster, Evelyn."
"No, Adrian. I was an investigator," I corrected him, my voice steady and precise. "I married you because I genuinely believed you were a good man who wanted to build a legacy. But within six months, I realized you and your mother were using my charitable foundation as a personal piggy bank. When I tried to look into the books, your mother threatened to cut off my access to the scholarship programs I managed. So, I stopped fighting you openly. I went underground."
I slid a photograph across the table. It was a high-resolution surveillance image of Celeste Arden meeting with a known international money launderer in a hotel lobby in Vienna—a hotel owned by the Vance Group.
"You thought I didn't know about the trips to Europe?" I let out a soft, dry laugh. "I approved the corporate travel vouchers, Adrian. I let you think you were being incredibly clever, while every single transaction was being logged by the Calder security network. I didn't stay with you because I was weak; I stayed with you until the evidence was completely bulletproof."

Adrian stared at the photograph, his jaw dropping as the absolute finality of his ruin settled into his brain. "My mother... she won't let you get away with this. She has resources you don't know about."
"Your mother just signed a full asset-forfeiture agreement to avoid spending the rest of her life in a maximum-security prison," I said, closing the folder with a definitive snap. "She traded your inheritance for a comfortable minimum-security retirement. You're entirely on your own, Adrian. And as for Celeste... she’s currently giving the federal prosecutors every single detail about your operation in exchange for a reduced sentence. She never loved you, Adrian. She loved the Vance checkbook, and that checkbook just bounced."
