Chapter 5 - The Gift of a New Dawn

Three weeks later.

The golden afternoon sun of South Florida shimmered across the turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay.

Nora stood on the wide, marble terrace of a breathtaking waterfront villa in Key Biscayne. The air smelled of salt water, hibiscus flowers, and fresh ocean breeze. She wore a soft, elegant white cotton dress, her hair flowing freely down her back.

In her hand, she held a letter from her bank in Providence.

Her seventy thousand dollars in medical debt had been paid in full. Furthermore, a trust fund established in her name had deposited five million dollars into her account—listed under the name The Vance Healthcare Education Foundation.

She was free. Completely, totally free.

Yet, every night for the past three weeks, she had stood on this terrace, looking out at the ocean, her heart aching for the sharp gray eyes of the man who had promised to come for her.

She heard soft, heavy footsteps moving across the marble terrace behind her.

Nora turned around.

Zeo Rossi stood there.

He looked healthier, broader, his suit replaced by a dark blue linen shirt and trousers, the cold, lethal air of the mafia boss replaced by a deep, peaceful warmth.

Nora dropped the letter. Her breath hitched in her throat. "Zeo..."

Zeo didn't speak. He closed the distance between them in three long strides, wrapping his large, warm arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

Nora buried her face in his neck, inhaling the crisp scent of sea air, expensive soap, and cedarwood that belonged only to him. She wrapped her arms tightly around his shoulders, holding him as if she were afraid he would vanish into the air.

"You kept your promise," Nora whispered, tears of relief pricking her eyes.

"I told you," Zeo murmured into her hair, his deep voice thick with emotion. "A Rossi always repays his debts. And I owe you my life, my soul, and my future."

He pulled back slightly, holding her face between his large, warm hands, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear from her cheek.

"Is the city safe?" Nora asked softly.

"The city is clean," Zeo answered. "Thomas's network is dismantled. Camilla is facing twenty-five years in federal prison. And I have officially stepped down as the active head of the Rossi syndicate."

Nora’s hazel eyes widened in utter shock. "You stepped down?"

"I handed operational control of the commercial shipping lanes to Matteo and Moretti," Zeo explained, a gentle smile touching his lips. "I spent thirty years building an empire out of blood and fear, Nora. I thought that was all life had to offer. But lying in that hospital bed, listening to people plot my death, I realized that power means nothing if you have no one genuine to share it with."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek silver key, placing it into her small hand.

"What is this?" Nora asked.

"The deed to the Providence Children's Hospital Medical Center," Zeo revealed softly. "I purchased the entire research wing. It has been renamed the Arthur Vance Medical Pavilion, in honor of your father. And you, Nora Vance, have been appointed as the permanent Director of Patient Care."

Nora stared at the silver key, her chest heaving as a wave of overwhelming emotion washed over her. She looked up at him, her eyes shining with tears. "Zeo... this is... I don't know what to say..."

"Say you'll let me stand beside you," Zeo whispered, stepping closer, his dark eyes burning with pure, unadulterated devotion. "Say you'll let me spend the rest of my life protecting the woman who brought me back from the dark."

Nora didn't answer with words.

She reached up, wrapping her fingers around the nape of his neck, and pulled his lips down to hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with a sweet, breathtaking passion that washed away every memory of bleach, hospital beds, and betrayal. Zeo wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet, holding her against his heart as the Florida ocean breeze swept across the terrace.
