Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Fevered DreamThe sterile, fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway felt like a personal insult to Alejandro Salcedo. In his world, things were constructed of polished granite, steel beams, and glass—predictable, sturdy, and entirely under his control. Here, in the public emergency ward, the air tasted of desperation, disinfectant, and the sharp, metallic tang of shared suffering.

He sat in a plastic chair that groaned under his weight, watching Renata and Camila. The twins were huddled together on a narrow bench, their small, dirt-streaked faces illuminated by the flickering overhead lights. They looked like two sparrows caught in a storm, still clutching the teddy bears he had left on their doorstep.

"She’s going to be okay, isn't she?" Renata asked. Her voice was thin, devoid of its usual defensive edge.

Alejandro looked at them, feeling a profound, aching vulnerability he hadn't experienced in years. "The doctors are working as fast as they can. Your mother is a fighter, Renata. You saw how hard she worked every single day. She has more strength in her little finger than most people have in their whole bodies."

"Why did you come?" Camila whispered, staring at the floor. "Mom said you'd want something in return."

Alejandro leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. He looked back at his own life—the empty, cavernous apartment in Polanco, the chauffeur-driven car that felt like a rolling coffin, and the endless meetings about square footage and profit margins that left him feeling hollower every passing month.

"I didn't come because I wanted something," Alejandro said quietly. "I came because I saw myself in you. And because, for the first time in a very long time, I didn't want to be the guy who just walks by."

The double doors swung open, and a doctor with tired eyes emerged. He wiped his hands on a blue paper gown. "Are you the guardian for Mariana Ortega?"

Alejandro stood up, his height and presence immediately commanding the space. "I’m the person who brought her in. What is her status?"

"She has severe pneumonia that has turned into acute respiratory distress," the doctor explained, his voice low and professional. "She’s been suffering from chronic exhaustion and malnutrition, which weakened her immune system to the point of collapse. We’ve started her on IV antibiotics and oxygen, but she’s not out of the woods. The next twenty-four hours are critical."

Renata gripped Camila’s hand so hard her knuckles turned white. Alejandro felt a sudden, sharp clarity. This wasn't a business transaction. This wasn't a PR stunt. This was life and death, and for once, he had the resources to tip the scale.

"Spare no expense," Alejandro said, his voice dropping into the tone he used when finalizing multi-million dollar contracts. "Move her to a private room, bring in the best specialists, and ensure she has round-the-clock nursing care. Whatever the hospital needs, I will personally guarantee the payment."

The doctor looked at him, surprised by the sudden transition from concerned stranger to authoritative benefactor. "Sir, a private room isn't usually available in this wing, but..."

"I’ll buy the wing if I have to," Alejandro interrupted, his eyes hard and focused. "Just make her breathe again."

Chapter 4 - The Construction of TrustThe recovery was slow and grueling. Mariana, always the fighter, insisted on physical therapy the moment she was cleared for movement. During those weeks, Alejandro became a permanent fixture in their lives, not as a master, but as a student. Chapter 6 - The Unwritten BlueprintThe storm eventually broke, as all storms do. When Alejandro held a press conference, he didn't just defend Mariana’s work—he displayed it. He laid out the blueprints, the cost analyses, and the vision of what these homes meant for the people of the city. He invited the journalists to walk through the construction site, to see the homes being built, and to talk to the families who were on the waiting list.
