Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Within forty-eight hours, Brielle was fully recovered, but leaving the Vance Estate proved far more complicated than she imagined. Mateo insisted she stay in the penthouse under full security protection until his team identified who had ordered the hit on his family.
Brielle wasn't used to luxury. She felt out of place surrounded by marble floors, private chefs, and armed guards. To keep herself busy, she began helping Helena around the estate, baking pastries in the massive kitchen, and playing storybook games with Mia, who had attached herself to Brielle like a second shadow.
For Mateo, watching Brielle in his home was a strange, transformative experience.
Since his wife had passed away during childbirth five years ago, the Vance Estate had been a cold, silent fortress focused entirely on business, security, and survival. But Brielle’s presence brought warmth back into the glass walls. She laughed openly with his mother, she played hide-and-seek with Mia in the hallways, and every evening when Mateo returned from his corporate office downtown, she had a warm cup of coffee waiting for him on his desk.
One late evening, around 1:00 a.m., Mateo was sitting in his dim private study, staring at a wall covered in financial ledgers and suspect profiles.
Brielle walked in softly, carrying a tray with chamomile tea. She set it on the desk and noticed the dark circles under his eyes.
"You haven't slept in two days," Brielle said gently, stepping closer to the desk.
"The three men we captured on the street were hired through an anonymous shell account in the Cayman Islands," Mateo said, running a tired hand through his dark hair. "The hit wasn't meant for ransom. It was a liquidation order. Someone wants the Vance family eliminated so they can take over our port logistics routes."
Brielle’s eyes wandered to the wall of suspect photos. Her gaze landed on a photograph of a middle-aged man with sharp features, slicked-back hair, and a silver signet ring on his pinky finger.
Brielle froze. Her breath caught in her throat.
Mateo noticed her sudden stillness immediately. "Brielle? What is it?"
Brielle walked up to the board, her fingers trembling as she pointed directly at the photograph of the man with the silver signet ring.
"His name is Julian Vance," Mateo said, watching her reaction carefully. "He's my late uncle’s former business partner. We've been investigating his shipping firms for months, but we haven't found a direct link to the hitmen yet. Why? Do you know him?"
"I... I don't know his name," Brielle whispered, her voice shaking violently. "But I know that ring. Eleven years ago... when my little sister was taken from the alley behind our apartment... the man who grabbed her was wearing that exact silver signet ring with the snake carving."
Mateo stood up slowly from his chair, a cold, deadly chill washing over him. "What are you saying, Brielle?"
"My sister’s name was Clara," Brielle sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks as the dark memory finally crashed through her walls. "She was six years old. My parents were working night shifts, and I was supposed to guard her. A black car pulled into the alley. A man with that silver ring stepped out, grabbed Clara, and drove away. I was sixteen, Mateo... I was so scared I hid behind the trash cans and didn't make a sound. I let them take her!"
Mateo crossed the room in two strides, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her firmly into his chest as she broke down into deep, painful sobs. He held her tight, letting her release eleven years of hidden agony against his shoulder.
"You were a child, Brielle," Mateo whispered fiercely into her hair. "You were a sixteen-year-old child facing human monsters. It wasn't your fault."
"He took my sister, Mateo!" she wept against his shirt. "And today... today he tried to take your daughter!"

Mateo pulled back slightly, holding her face between his strong hands, wiping her tears away with his thumbs. His silver eyes burned with a dark, terrifying promise.
"Then he just made the last mistake of his life," Mateo said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "Julian Vance thought he was fighting me for money and territory. He doesn't know that he just made it personal for the woman who saved my child. I will tear his entire world apart, Brielle. I promise you."
