Chapter 4 - The Gala of Shadows

Three days later, the underworld of Chicago was invited to the annual Commerce Ball at the Grand Plaza Hotel—a high-society event where corrupt politicians, shipping magnates, and syndicate bosses met under the guise of charity and business.

Julian Vance believed he was untouchable. He had spent weeks orchestrating the hit on Mateo’s family, believing that once Mateo was grieving and broken, he could easily seize control of the port authorities.

At 9:00 p.m., the grand ballroom was filled with music, champagne glasses, and women in designer gowns. Julian stood near the center bar, sipping scotch, laughing with a group of city council members, his silver snake signet ring gleaming under the crystal chandeliers.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

The room fell into an immediate, breathless hush.

Mateo Vance walked into the room, looking breathtakingly handsome in a black tuxedo. But it wasn't Mateo who captivated the crowd’s attention—it was the woman on his arm.

Brielle Dawson looked magnificent. She wore a floor-length dark emerald silk gown that accentuated her graceful figure, her dark hair styled in elegant waves, a diamond necklace glittering against her collarbone. The bandaged hand was hidden under a chic, silk glove, but her posture was regal, her chin held high, her brown eyes burning with unwavering courage.

Beside them walked Dominic and six armed Vance operatives, their presence projecting absolute, terrifying power.

Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. His glass slipped from his hand, shattering against the marble floor, scotch soaking into his polished shoes.

"Impossible..." Julian muttered, his eyes wide with shock as he stared at Mateo—and then at Brielle.

Mateo walked straight through the crowd, the onlookers parting like the Red Sea, until he stood three feet away from Julian.

"Good evening, Julian," Mateo said, his voice smooth as silk, echoing clearly over the quieted room. "You look surprised to see me. Did you think I was attending a funeral tonight?"

Julian swallowed hard, trying desperately to regain his composure in front of the city's elite. "Mateo... I don't know what you're talking about. I’m glad to see your family is well."

"Are you?" Mateo smiled—a cold, terrifying expression that sent shivers down the spines of everyone nearby. "Because the three men you hired from the Cayman account gave a full taped confession to federal prosecutors two hours ago."

The crowd gasped. Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward the exits, but Dominic and two operatives were already blocking every door.

"You have no proof—" Julian stammered.

Brielle stepped forward, standing side by side with Mateo. She looked Julian directly in his eyes, her voice ringing out clear and powerful across the ballroom.

"Eleven years ago, you wore that ring when you stole a six-year-old girl named Clara Dawson from an alley on Ashland Avenue," Brielle said, her voice filled with righteous fury. "You thought nobody saw you. You thought the scared little girl behind the trash cans would stay quiet forever."

Julian stared at her, real terror finally taking root in his chest. "Who... who are you?"

"I am the girl who stopped your hitmen on the South Side three days ago," Brielle said, taking a step closer to him, her eyes fierce. "And I am the reason you are going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal prison cell."

At that exact moment, the main doors burst open once more. Ten federal agents dressed in tactical gear marched into the ballroom, led by a high-ranking U.S. Attorney holding an arrest warrant.

"Julian Vance!" the attorney declared loudly. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, human trafficking, conspiracy, and federal racketeering!"

As the federal agents slammed Julian against the marble bar and snapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists, Julian screamed curses at Mateo and Brielle. But Brielle didn't flinch. She stood proud, holding Mateo’s hand, watching the monster who had haunted her childhood nightmares dragged away in chains forever.
