Chapter 2 - Voices in the Dark

The morning sun broke over the horizon, casting long, sharp shadows through the windows of our suburban home. I had not slept a single minute. Instead, I spent the final hours of the night compiling a comprehensive forensic dossier.

Through Northstar’s financial networks and my own military legal contacts, I had spent the night pulling every bank statement associated with my mother's accounts over the last twelve months. The data was damning. Rachel and Cole hadn't just stolen money; they had systematically bled my mother's life savings dry to fund Cole's failing construction business and Rachel’s luxury shopping habits.

Worse, I discovered the identity of Dr. Sterling. He wasn't a legitimate state psychiatrist. He was a corrupt medical professional who had recently lost his hospital affiliation due to illegal prescription distribution, a man currently under a quiet federal investigation. Rachel had promised him a $50,000 "consulting fee" from the liquidated estate once my mother was put away.

At 7:30 a.m., Rachel came downstairs, wearing a crisp, elegant white blouse and a look of practiced concern. She placed a cup of coffee in front of me, her fingers lingering on my neck.

"Did you sleep at all, darling?" she asked softly.

"Not much," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on the coffee mug. "Just thinking about Mom. It’s hard to accept."

"I know," she sighed, sitting across from me. "But you have to be strong for her now, Daniel. Keeping her here is dangerous. Last week, she threw a vase at me. She’s a danger to herself and to us. Dr. Sterling is the best in his field. His facility in upstate is beautiful. She’ll have twenty-four-hour care."

"And the paperwork?" I asked, my voice flat.

"I have the psychiatric evaluation file right here," Rachel said, tapping a thick blue folder resting on the kitchen island. "It just needs your signature as her primary next of kin. Once you sign, Dr. Sterling can legally take custody and handle the asset transition so we can pay for her medical bills."

The front doorbell rang, its chimes echoing through the quiet house. Rachel’s eyes lit up with an predatory excitement she couldn't entirely hide.

"That must be him," she said, smoothing down her skirt as she stood up. "Let me get the door. Just stay calm, Daniel. Let the professionals handle the heavy lifting."

I watched her walk down the hallway, her smile bright and welcoming as she opened the front door to greet Dr. Sterling and her brother Cole, who had arrived right on cue to act as a witness.

I reached into my breast pocket, pulled out a flash drive containing the raw audio files from last night, alongside a certified federal dossier from the Office of Medical Compliance. I slipped the drive directly into the blue folder, replacing my mother's fraudulent medical file with a document that carried the weight of a federal execution order.
