Chapter 3 - The Ambush at Dawn

Dr. Sterling was a tall, thin man with an air of clinical detachment that felt entirely manufactured. He carried a heavy leather briefcase and wore a silver pen clipped to his pocket like a badge of office. Cole stood beside him, wearing a leather jacket, his hands stuffed into his pockets, his gaze darting around the room with the nervous energy of a thief waiting for the alarm to sound.

"Mr. Mercer," Dr. Sterling said, offering a cold, dry hand as he entered the living room. "I am sorry we have to meet under such difficult circumstances. Your wife has kept me fully informed of your mother’s rapid degradation."

"Thank you for coming, Doctor," I said, shaking his hand firmly. "Rachel says you’ve been very thorough."

"We try to be," Sterling replied, sitting on the sofa and opening his briefcase. "Given the severity of the hallucinations and the physical self-harm reported by Mrs. Mercer and her brother, an immediate, involuntary long-term placement is the only viable path. I have the commitment mandate ready for your signature."

Rachel stepped up beside him, placing the blue folder on the coffee table directly in front of me. She handed me a heavy gold pen, her eyes pleading, performing the role of the heartbroken wife perfectly for the doctor’s benefit.

"Please, Daniel," Rachel whispered. "Do it for her. Let’s protect her before she hurts someone else."

I picked up the pen, balanced it between my fingers, and looked directly at Cole. "Cole, you’ve seen her outbursts too, right?"

"Oh, yeah," Cole lied smoothly, crossing his arms. "Just last Tuesday, she tried to run out into traffic, Daniel. Said people were stealing from her. She didn't even know what year it was. It’s a tragedy, man. Truly."

"A tragedy," I repeated, my voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register.

I set the pen down on top of the blue folder. I didn't sign the document. Instead, I leaned back in my chair, crossed my legs, and pulled my phone from my pocket, tapping the screen once to activate the room’s main audio speakers.

A voice suddenly boomed through the living room, crystal clear and terrifyingly familiar.

“Hook, line, and sinker... He sat on the floor and cried like a baby... Tomorrow at nine, Dr. Sterling comes by. Daniel will sign the long-term involuntary commitment papers, and by noon, the Mercer estate trust is completely ours to liquidate.”

Rachel froze, her hand remaining suspended in mid-air as her own voice filled the space around her. Cole’s face drained of color so fast he looked as though he were going to faint.

Dr. Sterling stood up instantly, his clinical detachment evaporating into pure panic. "What... what is the meaning of this?"

"That’s a very interesting audio file, isn't it, Dr. Sterling?" I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor.
