Chapter 3 - The Discovery

The evening sun had completely disappeared by the time Arthur Vance unlocked the front door of the house. He was in a fantastic mood.
He had spent the afternoon at an upscale bar downtown with Brooke, celebrating the upcoming launch of her salon. They had drank expensive scotch, laughed about how "easy" it was to handle me, and planned how they would spend the rest of my inheritance once they finally forced me to hand over the primary bank card.
"She'll be upstairs crying," Arthur said, tossing his keys onto the entryway table as Brooke walked in behind him, her designer heels clicking loudly on the hardwood. "She always does this. She'll lock herself in the guest room for a couple of days, and then she'll come crawling back, apologizing and begging me to forgive her. That’s when we get the card."
"Honestly, Artie, you did what had to be done," Brooke said, adjusting her expensive leather jacket. "She needs to learn her place. She's been holding onto that money like she actually did something to earn it. It’s family money now."
"Exactly," Arthur smirked, walking into the kitchen to grab a glass of water. "Clara! Get down here and make us some dinner! We're—"
He stopped.
The kitchen was dark, save for the pale ambient light coming from the microwave clock. He reached out and flipped the light switch.
The bright overhead LEDs illuminated the room.
Arthur’s eyes drifted to the kitchen table. The overturned chair still lay on the floor. But in the center of the dark wood, sitting directly next to the stained coffee mug, was my platinum wedding band.
Beside the ring lay a single, white envelope with his name written on the front in my neat, precise handwriting.
"What is this?" Brooke asked, walking into the kitchen and frowning at the table. "Did she leave?"
Arthur didn't answer. A strange, unfamiliar knot of unease began to form in his stomach. He walked over to the table, picked up the envelope, and tore it open.
Inside was not a tear-stained letter begging for reconciliation. It was a single sheet of high-grade legal paper—a copy of an emergency restraining order, accompanied by a summons for a divorce petition listing charges of domestic assault and grand financial fraud.
"She... she sued me?" Arthur whispered, his face losing its color. "She got a restraining order?"
"Are you kidding me?!" Brooke gasped, grabbing the paper from his hands. "How did she get a lawyer so fast? She doesn't have the guts to do this!"
Before Arthur could reply, his cell phone began to ring. The caller ID read: RICHARD STEIN - CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, VANCE GLOBAL.
Arthur answered quickly, his voice tight. "Richard? What’s going on? I’m a bit busy—"
"Arthur!" Richard’s voice was hysterical, bordering on a scream. "What the hell did you do?! I just got a notification from our primary commercial bank. All of our corporate accounts have been frozen by a court order! Every single transaction for the last six months is being audited by a forensic team!"
Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs. "What?! On what grounds? That’s my company!"
"They have a court order signed by a federal judge, Arthur!" Richard shouted. "They're alleging massive financial fraud, wire fraud, and unauthorized asset transfers from a private trust! And that’s not all. I just got a call from the district attorney's office. They’re asking about your personal accounts, and they've issued a warrant for your arrest!"
"No, no, that’s a mistake," Arthur stammered, his hand shaking so violently he almost dropped the phone. "It’s just Clara. She’s throwing a tantrum because—"
Suddenly, the loud, authoritative knock of heavy knuckles echoed from the front door.
Arthur and Brooke froze, looking toward the entryway. Through the frosted glass of the front door, the bright, flashing red and blue lights of multiple police cruisers painted the walls of the hallway in a rhythmic, terrifying pattern.
"Arthur Vance!" a booming voice called out from the porch. "This is the Kansas City Police Department! We have a warrant for your arrest! Open the door immediately!"

Brooke let out a sharp, terrified shriek, dropping the legal papers onto the floor. "Arthur! What did you do?! What is happening?!"
Arthur stood in the center of his kitchen, the smug, arrogant mask he had worn for eight years completely shattering, leaving nothing but the pale, trembling face of a man who had finally realized his victim was no longer playing victim.
