Chapter 4 - The Fall of Brooke’s Dream

The cold steel of the handcuffs around Arthur’s wrists had been a shock, but the real nightmare began the following morning in the holding cells of the county courthouse.

Arthur sat on a cold concrete bench, his expensive suit rumpled and smelling of sweat and cheap jail disinfectant. His hair was messy, and the confident, commanding posture he usually carried was completely gone. Across from him, behind a scratched plexiglass window in the visitor’s room, stood Brooke. She looked exhausted, her makeup smeared, her hands shaking as she held the visitor's telephone.

"They shut it down, Artie," Brooke sobbed into the receiver, her voice cracking with a mixture of anger and despair. "They shut the whole salon down. Capstone Financial issued a default notice on the loan this morning. They said the collateral was fraudulent!"

"How?" Arthur muttered, his voice hollow. "I signed the papers. I had the power of attorney over Clara’s accounts."

"You forged her signature, Arthur!" Brooke screamed through the phone, ignoring the glances of the guards nearby. "The forensic examiners proved it! They said Capstone Financial is taking immediate possession of the property and all of the equipment to satisfy the debt! I’ve lost everything! The launch party, the inventory, the deposits—everything is gone!"

"Where is Clara?" Arthur asked, his eyes bloodshot. "Have you called her? She has to drop this. Tell her I’ll apologize. Tell her I’ll do whatever she wants. I just need to get out of here!"

"She’s not answering her phone, Arthur," a calm, professional voice interrupted.

Arthur looked up. Standing behind Brooke was a tall, sharp-looking man in a grey suit. It was his own defense attorney, Marcus Thorne, whom Brooke had hired using the last of her personal savings. Thorne did not look optimistic.

"Mr. Vance," Thorne said, taking the phone from Brooke. "I’ve just reviewed the charges filed against you by the state and the federal financial regulators. To be blunt, you are in an incredibly precarious position. The domestic assault charge for the coffee throwing is a felony, backed by extensive medical documentation and photographic evidence from the hospital. But that is the least of your worries."

Arthur swallowed hard. "What do you mean?"

"The wire fraud and bank fraud charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in a federal penitentiary," Thorne said, opening his briefcase to reveal a stack of documents. "The prosecution has complete access to your transaction history. They have proof that you used your wife’s personal digital signature to authorize transfers to Vance Global Enterprises without her consent. And there’s a new development."

"What development?" Arthur whispered.

"The primary shareholder of Sterling Associates—the parent company of Capstone Financial—has personally requested that the district attorney prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law," Thorne said. "They are refusing any plea deals. They want maximum sentencing."

"Who is the primary shareholder?" Arthur asked, a desperate, angry edge rising in his voice. "Is it some board member? Some rich friend of her father’s? Let me talk to them! I can negotiate!"

Thorne looked at Arthur with a mixture of pity and disbelief.

"Mr. Vance, didn't you know?" Thorne asked. "The primary shareholder of Sterling Associates is Clara Vance. She owns ninety percent of the company. She is the one pushing for your prosecution. She is the one who took your sister's salon. She owns everything."

The phone slid from Arthur’s hand, clattering against the metal shelf below the plexiglass.

The room seemed to spin. Clara. The quiet, submissive graphic designer who spent her days drawing logos on her laptop. The woman he had patronized, ridiculed, and finally splashed with boiling liquid.

She didn't just have an inheritance. She owned the very company that held his financial life in its hands.

"No..." Arthur whispered, his forehead pressing against the cold glass of the partition. "No, that’s impossible..."

"She played you, Arthur," Brooke whispered, her voice filled with a sudden, terrifying realization. "She let us think we were winning. She set the trap, and we walked right into it."
