Chapter 2 - The Silent Storm

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over a chilly, overcast sky.
Inside a private conference room on the fourteenth floor of Vance & Associates in downtown Columbus, I sat across from Attorney Marcus Vance. He was a silver-haired man in his late fifties with a reputation for merciless efficiency in family and criminal court.
Marcus reviewed the downloaded video files on his widescreen monitor. As the clip of Lydia shaving Louisa’s head played, followed by the footage of Walter striking me across the face, Marcus’s jaw tightened.
"This is indisputable," Marcus said, pausing the video and turning his screen toward me. "We have felony child abuse, domestic assault, false imprisonment of a minor, and extortion captured on high-definition video with clear audio. Furthermore, the footage of Walter admitting to forging Elmer's identity for illegal gambling debts opens up a federal wire and bank fraud investigation."
"I don't want a quiet settlement, Mr. Vance," I said, leaning forward. "I want them held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
"They will be," Marcus assured me, pulling out a set of official legal documents. "I am filing for an immediate ex parte emergency protection order for you and Louisa. Under this order, neither Elmer, Lydia, Walter, nor Heather can come within five hundred yards of you, your daughter, your workplace, or your temporary residence. Furthermore, I am submitting these video files directly to the Special Victims Unit of the Columbus Police Department."
"What about Elmer?" I asked.
"Your husband is legally complicit if he attempts to cover up the abuse or intimidate you," Marcus explained. "Has he tried to contact you since yesterday?"
I pulled out my phone, unblocking Elmer's number temporarily to check his messages.
A barrage of fifty missed calls and dozens of furious text messages flooded my screen:
10:14 PM: "Joanna, where the hell are you?! Mom is hysterical because you took your suitcase! Come back right now!"
1:30 AM: "My dad said you raised your voice at him! You have no respect for my family! If you don't bring Louisa back by tomorrow morning, I'm taking away your access to our joint account!"
6:45 AM: "You think you're smart? I'm driving back from Indianapolis right now. When I get there, you better be waiting at my parents' house on your knees."
I handed the phone to Marcus. He read the texts, a cold, professional smile spreading across his face.
"Excellent," Marcus said, taking screenshots of every single message and printing them out for the case binder. "He is actively threatening financial retaliation and attempting to force a victim of domestic violence back into the house of her abusers. This guarantees his exclusion from temporary custody rights."
"Where do we start?" I asked.
"First, we secure your assets," Marcus said. "I am issuing a legal freezing order on your joint account before Elmer arrives in town. Second, we let the police do their job. Detective Sarah Jenkins from the SVU is already reviewing the footage I sent her twenty minutes ago. She wants to interview you and examine Louisa's injuries at eleven o'clock."
At 11:30 AM, I brought Louisa to the regional child advocacy center attached to the police precinct.
Detective Jenkins, a compassionate but stern officer, gently examined Louisa’s scalp, taking detailed forensic photographs of the red razor burns, the small cuts left by Lydia’s careless hands, and the bruise on my own swollen lip. A child psychologist sat with Louisa, letting her draw with crayons while recording her innocent, heart-wrenching explanation of what happened.
"They said I was bad," Louisa whispered to the psychologist, holding her bunny tightly. "Grandma said I stole the shiny thing. But I didn't touch it. I was building my blocks."
Detective Jenkins closed her notepad, her face pale with restrained anger. She looked at me and squeezed my shoulder.
"Mrs. Joanna," Detective Jenkins said softly. "You did the right thing by walking out and coming straight to us. With the video evidence and these forensic reports, arrest warrants for Lydia, Walter, and Heather are being signed by a magistrate judge as we speak."

"What about my husband?" I asked. "He's on his way back to his parents' house right now."
Detective Jenkins checked her watch. "Then he’s walking straight into a police dragnet."
