Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The arrest of the Vance family sent shockwaves through their community, but the nightmare was only beginning for Elmer.
By Friday morning, news of the felony charges had leaked to the local media. The local news channel ran a segment titled "Suburban Family Arrested After Hidden Camera Catches Shocking Child Abuse and Gambling Ring Scheme."
Elmer sat in his empty, cold apartment, staring at the television screen in horror as footage of his mother, father, and sister being led into the courthouse in orange jumpsuits played on loop.
His phone rang. It was his manager from his engineering firm in Indianapolis.
"Elmer," his boss's voice was devoid of any warmth. "We’ve seen the news reports and received a formal notice from the police regarding an ongoing investigation into financial fraud involving your name."
"Boss, please! I didn't know my father forged my signature!" Elmer pleaded frantically. "I'm a victim here too!"
"Your personal moral character and home situation have created a massive liability for this company," his boss replied coldly. "Furthermore, your wife's legal team served us with a corporate subpoena for your wage garnishment regarding emergency child support. Effective immediately, you are terminated from your position."
"Wait! No! Please!" Elmer cried out, but the line went dead.
Desperate and drowning, Elmer rushed to the county jail to post bail for his family. But when he reached the clerk's desk, he received another crushing blow.
"Bail for Walter Vance is set at two hundred and fifty thousand dollars due to flight risk and secondary federal fraud charges," the clerk stated flatly. "Bail for Lydia Vance is set at one hundred thousand dollars. Bail for Heather Vance is fifty thousand dollars."
"Four hundred thousand dollars?!" Elmer yelled, his voice cracking. "I don't have that kind of money! My wife froze our joint account!"
"Then they remain in holding until their preliminary hearing," the clerk replied, sliding the papers away.
Defeated, humiliated, and utterly broke, Elmer drove to Vance & Associates to demand an audience with me.
When he walked into the sleek glass lobby, he was instantly intercepted by Marcus Vance and two armed private security guards.
"Where is Joanna?!" Elmer screamed, his clothes wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot. "Let me see my wife! Joanna! Come out here!"
Marcus walked over calmly, holding a thick legal file.
"Mr. Vance, you are currently violating a temporary protection order by standing in this building," Marcus stated, his voice calm and lethal. "If you do not step out of those doors in five seconds, these guards will detain you for immediate arrest."
"She's my wife!" Elmer sobbed, dropping his aggression, tears streaming down his face. "Louisa is my daughter! Please, just let me talk to her! I was wrong! I didn't know my dad did those things! I didn't know my mom was that cruel! Please, tell Joanna I'm sorry!"
Marcus looked at Elmer with a look of pure, unadulterated disgust.
"You weren't sorry when your daughter was crying on a cold balcony with a shaved head," Marcus said softly. "You weren't sorry when your father struck your wife. You only care now because your money is gone, your job is gone, and your precious family is sitting in a jail cell."
Marcus pulled a document from the folder and held it out.
"This is an unconditional surrender of parental rights and a full divorce settlement," Marcus said. "If you sign this today, Joanna will agree not to press secondary civil charges against you personally for financial neglect. If you refuse to sign, we will proceed with a full civil lawsuit that will leave you bankrupt for the rest of your life."

Elmer looked at the document. The realization finally hit him with the weight of a falling mountain: he had lost everything. He had traded a loving wife and a beautiful daughter to protect a toxic, abusive family that had used him, lied to him, and dragged him into their criminal abyss.
With trembling, ruined hands, Elmer took the pen from Marcus's jacket pocket and signed his name on the line.
