Part 3: The Hospital and the Shield

The sound of sirens was the last thing I remembered before the darkness completely took over.
When my eyes finally cracked open, the harsh, white glare of fluorescent lights told me I wasn't in the kitchen anymore. The smell of industrial antiseptic and the rhythmic, electronic beep of a fetal heart rate monitor filled the space. I tried to move my hand, but a sharp pain in my wrist stopped me. Looking down, I saw an IV line taped securely to my skin, delivering fluids and medication.
"Clara? Oh sweetie, stay still. Don't try to sit up."
I turned my head slowly. Standing beside the bed wasn't Daniel, but my former colleague from the forensic unit, Detective Marcus Vance, along with Dr. Elizabeth Vance, the chief of high-risk obstetrics at Baylor Medical Center.
"My... my babies," I rasped, my throat feeling like sandpaper. "Are they..."
Dr. Vance stepped forward, checking the readouts on the double monitor beside my bed. A soft, reassuring smile broke through her tired expression. "The twins are stable, Clara. You suffered an acute placental tear due to the physical trauma and elevated blood pressure, but our team managed to administer a localized emergency protocol to halt the premature labor. We've got you on strict bed rest and a continuous fetal monitor. They are safe for now, but we are keeping you in the high-security wing until delivery."
A massive, sobbing sigh of relief escaped my chest, my hands immediately flying to the heavy, round contour of my stomach. They were still there. They were still kicking, faint but rhythmic.
"Where is Daniel?" I asked, my voice shaking.
"He's currently over the Pacific Ocean," Marcus answered, pulling up a chair beside my bed. His expression was serious, his notebook already open. "He called the dispatch line directly from Singapore. Clara, the police officers found you within fifteen minutes of his call. They also recovered your phone from beneath the kitchen cabinet. The forensic tech team has already pulled the device logs."
"Vanessa..." I whispered, the memory of her sharp smile sending a shudder through my body. "She had a forged document. She altered the routing numbers... she tried to steal the trust money for her boutique."
"We know," Marcus said, leaning in. "But it's bigger than that, Clara. When the tech team extracted the device data from your phone, they found that the banking application didn't just activate a local lock. Because you designed that trust with advanced forensic tracking, the app captured a digital fingerprint of the device that sent the initial unauthorized access request two hours before Vanessa arrived at your house."
I blinked, trying to clear the mental fog. "What device?"
"A desktop computer located inside the corporate headquarters of Miller & Sons Construction," Marcus revealed, his eyes narrowing. "Someone inside the company gave Vanessa the internal ledger codes and the specific cryptographic keys required to generate that withdrawal form. Vanessa didn't just forge a signature; she had an accomplice who had access to Daniel’s private corporate vault."
The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow. The construction firm was a family-owned empire, but Daniel held 60% of the voting shares. The remaining 40% was split evenly between his mother Carol and his younger stepbrother, Julian, who served as the chief financial officer. Julian had always been deep in debt due to high-stakes gambling in New Orleans, a secret I had uncovered during our engagement but had kept private at Daniel’s request to preserve family unity.
"Julian," I muttered. "He gave her the keys."
"We are verifying the server logs now," Marcus said, standing up as a uniform officer stationed outside the door nodded to him through the glass partition. "But right now, Clara, you are under protective custody. Carol and Vanessa have already been flagged by the state police. They think they successfully cleaned out the trust before the lock activated, but what they don't know is that the bank intercepted the transaction. The $150,000 never left the vault. It was diverted into a federal escrow account used for criminal investigations."
The door to the hospital room opened quietly, and Dr. Vance stepped back as a tall, broad figure rushed into the room, his clothes wrinkled from a fourteen-hour flight, his hair disheveled, and his eyes bloodshot with absolute desperation.
It was Daniel.
He didn't say a word to the detective or the doctor. He dropped to his knees beside my bed, throwing his arms around me with a fierce, trembling desperation, his face buried in my neck as he wept openly. "I'm here, Clara," he choked out, his voice broken. "I'm so sorry. I should have never left. I should have never let them near you."
I held him tightly, my fingers tangling in his hair, the absolute security of his presence finally washing away the lingering terror of the kitchen floor. "They didn't get the money, Daniel," I whispered into his ear. "And they didn't get our babies."

Daniel pulled back, his tears drying as a cold, terrifying expression of pure dominance took over his features. He looked at Detective Vance, his jaw clenching tightly. "Marcus. Tell me you have enough to lock them away for the rest of their miserable lives."
"We have the video, Daniel," Marcus replied, tapping his tablet. "We have the audio. And thanks to your wife's forensic design, we are about to uncover the entire financial fraud network your family has been running behind your back."
