Chapter 4 - The ResignationBy 8:00 a.m. the next morning, the second-floor executive suite of Whitmore Freight & Marine was in a state of absolute panic.

Charles Whitmore was pacing behind his oversized mahogany desk, shouting into his speakerphone while Rebecca hovered near the doorway, wringing her hands in distress.
“What do you mean the federal customs bond was revoked?!” Charles roared at the phone. “We’ve held that bond for twenty years!”
“Sir, the primary guarantor withdrew authorization at 7:45 this morning,” a panicked voice crackled through the speaker. “Furthermore, all secondary compliance filings linked to the corporate registry have been frozen pending an immediate ownership audit by Vale Global Logistics.”
The office door swung open with a soft click.
Claire walked in. She wasn't wearing her usual oversized gray cardigan or her sensible, unbranded flats. She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit she had bought the night before using the signing bonus advance Dominic had wired to her account, her dark hair styled in a sleek, professional chignon, and a leather briefcase clutched in her left hand.
Charles slammed the phone down, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson.
“You!” Charles screamed, pointing a shaking finger at her. “This is your doing! You and that lunatic Dominic Vale! What have you done to my company?!”
Claire walked past her stepmother without glancing at her, stopping right in front of Charles’s desk. She reached into her briefcase, pulled out a single sheet of heavy paper, and laid it neatly across the center of his blotter.
“Good morning, Charles,” Claire said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. “That is my formal resignation from my position as unofficial corporate fixer, compliance manager, and invisible safety net.”
Charles stared at the paper as if it were a venomous snake. “Resignation? You don't have a position here! You’re an administrative assistant! You can't resign from nothing!”
“If I am nothing, Charles, then try running the company by noon today without my digital signature on your customs clearance portal,” Claire replied calmly. “Let’s see how long your dockworkers stay loyal when their payroll processing codes—which I wrote and encrypted myself—lock up permanently.”
Rebecca stepped forward, her face twisted in venomous hatred. “You ungrateful, spiteful little bitch! You think some mobster is going to take care of you? He’s just using you to destroy your father’s legacy!”
“My father never had a legacy, Rebecca,” Claire said, turning her cool, piercing gaze onto her stepmother. “He had a parasite that fed off my mother’s estate, my labor, and my silence. That ends today.”
She turned on her heel, walking toward the door.
“Claire, wait!” Charles choked out, his arrogance instantly evaporating into pathetic desperation as the terrifying reality of his situation finally began to sink in. “Please... we’re family! Whatever salary you want—double it, triple it! Just don't hand the company over to Vale—!”
Claire stopped at the doorway. She didn't look back.

“You should have asked me what I was worth years ago, Father,” she said softly.
Then she walked out into the corridor, closing the door behind her with a definitive, echoing click.
