Chapter 6 - The HorizonSix months later, the annual Baltimore Maritime Charity Gala was held not at the exclusive, stuffy halls of L'Étoile, but at the newly renovated Vale-Whitmore Maritime Center on the waterfront.

The ballroom was magnificent, filled with hundreds of the city’s most influential business leaders, diplomats, and international shipping magnates. But the atmosphere was entirely different from the sterile, judgmental dinners of the past. There was genuine laughter, vibrant conversation, and a palpable sense of renewed industry.

Charles Whitmore did not attend. He was currently residing in a modest two-bedroom suburban townhouse, fighting off federal indictments with a public defender, while Rebecca and her daughters tried desperately to sell their designer wardrobes to cover legal retainers.

Standing on the elevated glass terrace overlooking the harbor, Claire wore a stunning emerald silk evening gown that hugged her curves with effortless elegance, her head held high, radiating a quiet, unshakeable power.

Dominic stepped out onto the terrace beside her, handing her a glass of vintage champagne.

“Penny for your thoughts, Ms. COO?” he asked, clinking his glass gently against hers.

Claire looked out across the dark, glittering waters of the harbor, where dozens of massive cargo ships bearing the Vale-Whitmore emblem moved in precise, synchronized rhythm toward the open sea.

“I was just thinking about a question you asked me six months ago,” Claire murmured, a serene smile gracing her lips.

Dominic raised an eyebrow. “Which question was that?”

“‘Which daughter is yours?’” Claire quoted softly, turning her green eyes to meet his. “My father couldn't answer it because he never understood what I was worth.”

Dominic wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side as the autumn breeze swept in off the Atlantic.

“He was a fool,” Dominic said quietly, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple. “And the best part of the story is—you were never his to begin with.”

Claire laughed, the sound bright and unburdened, and lifted her champagne glass toward the vast, open horizon where the ships sailed free.
