Chapter 3 - The Descent of the Apex PredatorThe helicopter didn't land on the designated tarmac pad behind the estate; it slammed down directly onto the front lawn, churning up the manicured flowerbeds and sending patio furniture flying in a ferocious gale of rotor wash.

Inside the mansion, the sudden, deafening roar shook the crystal chandeliers.

Vanessa frowned, setting her wineglass down on the dining table with an annoyed huff. “What on earth is that racket? Did the gardener lose his mind?”

She stood up, smoothing her designer dress, and walked toward the grand foyer to investigate. Her relatives followed closely behind, murmuring in irritation.

The massive oak front doors didn't open with a polite knock.

They exploded inward, ripped completely off their reinforced steel hinges by a coordinated breach.

Fourteen heavily armed men in black tactical gear, bearing the insignia of my personal strike force, swarmed into the foyer, their assault rifles raised, lasers painting the walls in crimson arcs. They moved with absolute, terrifying military precision, securing every exit, stairwell, and perimeter window in less than four seconds.

At the center of the tactical formation walked me.

My charcoal suit jacket was gone, my tie ripped away, my sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle and cold sweat. My eyes were pitch-black, hollowed out by a rage so profound it felt like standing near the mouth of an active volcano.

Vanessa froze halfway down the grand staircase, her smug expression instantly melting into sheer, unadulterated terror.

“V-Vincent?” she stammered, clutching the wooden banister so hard her knuckles turned white. “What... what is the meaning of this? Why are there soldiers in the house? You’re supposed to be in Zurich for another two days—”

I didn't answer her. I didn't even slow my pace as I crossed the marble floor, my heavy boots echoing like funeral bells.

“Where is my son?” My voice was a low, seismic rumble that vibrated through the floorboards, stripping away the air in the room.

Vanessa swallowed hard, trying desperately to reconstruct her mask of arrogant innocence. “Ethan? Oh, he’s... he’s upstairs playing in his room, darling. You know how children are, he probably fell off his bed or scraped his knee while Maria was—interrupted by—”

“Don't lie to me,” I whispered.

I was standing at the foot of the stairs now, looking up at her with eyes that promised slow, agonizing destruction.

“Maria called me from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital,” I said, each word falling like an executioner’s axe. “She told me everything, Vanessa. She told me how your nephew terrorized my boy, and she told me how you raised your hand against him. How you split his skin. How you let him bleed on my floor.”

Vanessa’s face drained of every drop of color. She looked back at her relatives, who were cowering near the dining room entrance, paralyzed by the wall of tactical guards blocking their escape.

“It... it was a misunderstanding!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking in panic as she hurried down a few steps. “The boy was being insolent! He refused to share his toys with my nephew! I only disciplined him lightly, Vincent, you’re making a mountain out of a molehill, we’re family—!”

“Family?”

The word rolled off my tongue like poison.

Before she could take another step, I cleared the staircase in three massive bounds, grabbed her by the collar of her expensive dress, and slammed her bodily against the mahogany wall with enough force to rattle her teeth.

Her relatives screamed, but before any of them could move, three tactical operators leveled their assault rifles directly at their chests.

“You called him a brat,” I breathed, my face inches from hers, my hands trembling with the effort not to snap her neck right there on the spot. “You called my flesh and blood a nuisance. You struck a motherless child in his own home.”

“Vincent, please!” she sobbed, clawing frantically at my wrists. “I’m sorry! I won't ever do it again! Let me go!”

“Let you go?” A dark, humorless smile touched the corners of my mouth. “Vanessa, you don't seem to understand what just happened. You didn't just abuse a child. You signed your own death warrant.”
