Chapter 3 - The Aftermath and Healing

The house felt lighter that evening, cleansed of the toxic energy Vanessa had brought into our home.
Adrian sat across from me in the formal study, a cup of untouched tea cooling between his hands. He looked exhausted, the weight of his poor judgment pressing heavily on his shoulders. For hours, he had apologized repeatedly, his voice thick with guilt.
“I’m sorry, Mom,” he said for what felt like the hundredth time, staring down at the polished wood of the desk. “I wanted to believe the best in her so badly that I completely ignored the worst. I let someone cruel into our home because I was too blind to protect the people who actually mattered.”
I reached across the table, placing my hand over his calloused fingers. “Loyalty is a virtue, Adrian. Never let this experience turn you into a cynical man. Just make sure your loyalty is earned, not demanded.”
He managed a weak, appreciative smile. “How did you endure all of that today? Without blowing your cover?”
