Chapter 2 - The Sanctuary of Iron and Silk

I woke up to the rhythmic, comforting beep of a heart monitor.
My first instinct was to panic. I tried to bolt upright, but a sharp, agonizing pull in my left shoulder slammed me back onto the pillows. A soft gasp escaped my lips as the pain washed over me, though it was much duller now, muffled by the heavy warmth of high-grade painkillers running through an IV in my right arm.
"Don't try to move," a soft, familiar voice murmured. "The doctor said the bone was shattered, but they managed to reconstruct it with titanium pins. If you pull the stitches, they'll have to open you up again."
I blinked, my eyes adjusting to the soft, warm lighting of the room. This wasn't a county hospital. The walls were lined with expensive mahogany paneling, and the bed I was lying on was draped in silk sheets that felt like clouds against my skin. Giant floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over a sprawling, mist-covered estate, with the distant skyline of Boston visible through the pine trees.
Sitting in a plush armchair beside my bed was Cesily Colazo. She had washed the blood and champagne from her face, and she was wearing a simple, oversized cashmere sweater. Her blue eyes were wide and filled with an overwhelming, vulnerable gratitude.
"Cesily," I croaked, my throat feeling like it was coated in sand. "Where... where am I?"
"You're at my brother's estate in the Blue Hills," she said, quickly rising to pour a glass of water from a crystal decanter. She held the straw to my lips, helping me take a few small, desperate sips. "It's safe here, Mave. It’s a fortress. Nobody can get to you."
"My brother," I gasped, the water barely hitting my stomach before panic seized me again. "Finn! He’s alone in the apartment! He doesn't have his—"
"He's safe, Mave. I promise you," Cesily interrupted, her hand gently resting on my forearm. "Rafe sent his personal security team to fetch him the moment we arrived. He's downstairs in one of the guest suites. S actually went to get him herself. He’s been eating chocolate-chip pancakes and playing video games for the last three hours."
I stared at her, my heart hammering against my ribs. "He... he's here? He's okay?"
"He's more than okay," a deep, baritone voice echoed from the doorway.
I looked up. Rafe Colazo stood in the entrance of the room. He had changed out of his blood-stained suit into a dark charcoal-colored shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal strong, tattooed forearms. His silver-flecked black hair was pushed back, and his sharp, aristocratic jaw was shaded with a dark layer of stubble. He looked tired, but his presence still commanded the entire room, projecting an aura of absolute, undisputed power.
"Cesily," Rafe said, not breaking eye contact with me. "Leave us for a moment."
"Rafe, please be gentle with her," Cesily pleaded, standing up and squeezing my hand. "She saved my life."
"I know what she did," Rafe said quietly.
Once Cesily had slipped out of the room, closing the heavy oak door behind her, Rafe walked over and stood at the foot of my bed. He crossed his arms, his gray eyes studying me with a terrifyingly analytical gaze.
"Mave Donovan," he said, his voice low and deliberate. "A twenty-seven-year-old waitress at Saltline. No criminal record. Two outstanding credit card bills, three months behind on rent, and a brother who needs a pediatric arterial septal reconstruction surgery costing exactly $180,000."
I swallowed hard, feeling incredibly small under his gaze. "You looked into me."
"I look into everyone who bleeds for my family," Rafe replied, stepping closer to the bedside. "I had to ensure you weren't a plant. An assassin playing the long game, staging a rescue to get close to my sister."
"A plant?" I let out a weak, bitter laugh that ended in a wince. "I work eighty hours a week scrubby floors and carrying plates of expensive food I can't afford, just to keep my brother alive. I don't have time to play assassin, Mr. Colazo."
"I know," Rafe said, his expression softening just a fraction. "My security team confirmed your story. And the doctor confirmed that if you hadn't taken that blow, the steel rod would have crushed Cesily's skull. You saved her life, Mave."
"I just saw a kid about to die," I whispered, looking down at my bandaged shoulder. "I didn't think about who she was. I just wanted to help."
"People in my world don't 'just help' without expecting a payout," Rafe said, leaning forward, resting his hands on the edge of the bed. His face was only inches from mine now, and I could smell the faint scent of cedarwood and expensive tobacco on him. "So name your price. The surgery for your brother? Your debts paid off? A house in the suburbs? Ask, and it is yours."
I looked into his cold, gray eyes, and for a moment, I saw the immense, lonely burden of the man who ruled the Boston underworld. He thought everything had a price. He thought loyalty and sacrifice were transactions.
"I don't want your money, Mr. Colazo," I said, my voice steady despite the pain. "I mean... yes, I desperately need my brother’s surgery. But I didn't jump in front of that weapon for a bribe. I did it because it was the right thing to do."
Rafe stared at me, his eyes narrowing as if trying to solve a complex puzzle. "You are either incredibly brave, Mave, or incredibly foolish."
"Probably a bit of both," I admitted.
"Regardless," Rafe said, straightening up. "The surgery has already been scheduled. My personal medical director is coordinating with the chief of pediatric cardiology at Boston Children's Hospital. Finn's procedure is booked for Thursday morning. All costs have been fully paid."
Tears, hot and sudden, spilled over my eyelashes. I covered my mouth with my good hand, my chest heaving as a sob tore through my throat. "You... you paid for it? Truly?"
"I don't owe debts, Mave," Rafe said quietly, though his eyes lingered on my tears with an intensity that felt almost intimate. "And I protect those who protect what is mine. You and your brother are under my protection now. Which is fortunate, because the man who tried to kill my sister was not acting alone."
My breath hitched. "What do you mean?"
"The attacker S captured has started to talk," Rafe’s voice darkened, his jaw clenching. "He wasn't a rival gang member. He was paid by someone inside my own inner circle. Someone who knew exactly where Cesily would be dining, and who ordered the hit to make it look like a street robbery gone wrong."
May you like
"Who?" I asked, a chill running down my spine.
"I don't know yet," Rafe said, his gray eyes flashing with a deadly promise. "But when I find him, he will learn exactly why people fear the Colazo name. Until then, you and Finn stay here. You are safe. But the war is far from over."
