Chapter 6 - A Bright and Beautiful Horizon

The following spring arrived with a spectacular burst of color.
The gardens of the Blue Hills estate were in full bloom, with thousands of tulips and daffodils painting the lawns in shades of yellow, pink, and red.
Today was a special day. It was the grand opening of the Donovan-Colazo Pediatric Wing at Boston Children's Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility funded entirely by the Colazo Foundation.
I stood on the stage in front of the hospital entrance, a massive red ribbon stretched out before us. The crowd was packed with reporters, city officials, and the smiling families of the children we had already helped.
Finn stood beside me, wearing a miniature suit that matched Rafe’s, looking incredibly proud as he held the giant ceremonial scissors.
"Are you ready, buddy?" Rafe asked, kneeling down next to him, his hand resting gently on Finn’s shoulder.
"Ready!" Finn beamed.
Together, with the crowd counting down from three, Finn, Rafe, and I snipped the ribbon. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, balloons rising into the bright blue sky.
As the cameras flashed and the reporters scrambled to get interviews, Rafe quietly led me away from the crowd, taking my hand and walking toward the quiet sanctuary of the hospital's new rooftop garden.
The garden was beautiful, filled with lush greenery, comfortable benches, and a stunning view of the Boston harbor.
"We did it, Rafe," I said, leaning against the glass railing, looking out at the city where I had once struggled to survive. "We actually did it."
"No, Mave," Rafe said, standing behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist, pulling me close against his chest. "You did it. You took a cold, broken world and you gave it a heart."
I turned in his arms, looking up into the gray eyes that had once terrified me, but now brought me a sense of absolute safety and peace.
"I couldn't have done it without you," I whispered, my fingers running through his thick, dark hair. "You saved me, Rafe. In more ways than one."
"Then let me keep saving you," he said, his voice dropping to a low, intense frequency as he reached into his pocket and drew out a small, velvet box.
He opened it to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald ring surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds. It was a ring that looked like a drop of liquid spring, beautiful, vibrant, and full of life.
"Mave Donovan," Rafe said, his gray eyes burning with an intense, vulnerable love. "You ran into a hail of bullets to save my sister. You healed my family, and you healed my heart. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness filled my eyes, spilling down my cheeks as I laughed, a bright, beautiful sound that echoed through the garden.
"Yes, Rafe," I sobbed, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, a thousand times yes!"

He slid the ring onto my finger before pulling me into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our destiny.
Looking out over the city of Boston, with the sun shining brightly on the harbor below, I knew that the storm had officially passed. I was no longer the waitress drowning in debt, running from the shadows of the underworld. I was Mave Colazo, standing beside the man I loved, looking out at a bright, beautiful, and limitless horizon.
