Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The plan was as elegant as it was dangerous.
To destroy Derek completely, we had to let him believe he was still winning. Arthur utilized his extensive connections to place a highly confidential hold on the hospital’s medical records. With the cooperation of my primary OB/GYN—a close family friend—we leaked a controlled narrative to the media and to Derek’s camp.
The headline in the local Atlanta papers the next morning read:
“Local Executive’s Wife in Critical Coma Following Tragic Fall; Doctors Express Deep Concern Over Unborn Child’s Survival.”
When Marcus showed me the article, a shiver ran down my spine. "Is he going to buy this?"
"He has to," Arthur said. "He’s desperate. He has Victoria Hayes breathing down his neck. Marcus has intercepted messages from Victoria’s burners. She gave him a deadline: forty-eight hours to show proof of funds, or they send someone to collect his life instead."
As expected, within two hours of the article’s publication, Derek’s attorney contacted Great Southern Assurance to initiate the claim process, citing "anticipatory filing" due to my catastrophic medical state.
"The greed of this man is his undoing," Marcus muttered, tracking the digital footprints. "He’s already submitted the forged policy documents to the insurance adjuster. He’s claiming that your medical bills are mounting and he needs an immediate advance."
Meanwhile, I was moved to a highly secure, private wing of the hospital, under an assumed name. Only my father, Marcus, and my medical team knew where I was.
As the days passed, my physical strength began to return. The bruises on my face faded from a deep, ugly purple to a faint yellow. My fractured ribs still ached with every deep breath, but I was able to stand, to walk, and to hold my head high. The anger inside me had completely replaced the fear. I was no longer the fragile, accommodating wife who covered her bruises with concealer. I was a mother fighting for her child’s life, backed by the most formidable legal mind in the state.
"It's time to tighten the noose," Arthur announced on Friday evening. He had spent the last three days on the phone with federal judges, the SEC, and the regional director of the FBI.
"What's the play, Arthur?" Marcus asked.
"Derek thinks he’s playing a game of checkers, but we’ve already mapped out the entire chessboard," Arthur said, pouring himself a cup of black coffee. "Tomorrow morning, the insurance company is going to schedule an 'independent medical evaluation' of Rebecca to verify her comatose state before approving the emergency advance. Derek’s lawyer will accompany the adjuster. Derek will have to be there to sign the authorization forms."
"But I’m not in a coma," I said, a slow smile spreading across my lips as I realized what my father was planning.
"Exactly," Arthur chuckled, a dark, satisfying sound. "You are going to give your husband the surprise of his life. But before we do that, we’re going to ensure his financial partners are taken off the board. Marcus, is the wiretap active?"
"Live and recording," Marcus replied, tapping his keyboard. "We’ve tapped Derek’s primary cell and Victoria’s encrypted line. They just scheduled a meeting for tonight at 11:00 p.m. at an abandoned warehouse district near the Chattahoochee River. Derek is going to show her the insurance filing to buy himself more time."
"Perfect," Arthur said, putting on his coat. "I’ve already coordinated with the FBI's organized crime division. They’ve been building a case against Victoria’s syndicate for years, but they lacked a high-profile insider to tie the financial knot. Derek is about to tie that knot around his own neck."
He walked over to my bed, kneeling down to look me in the eyes. "Are you ready for this, Rebecca? Tomorrow, you face him."

I placed my hand on my stomach, feeling a strong, beautiful kick from my daughter.
"I've never been more ready in my life, Dad. Let's destroy him."
