Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Trap

The air inside the abandoned brick warehouse near the Chattahoochee River was thick with the scent of damp earth and rotting timber.
Derek stood shivering in the center of the empty space, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his designer coat. Despite the cool night air, sweat beaded on his forehead.
A sleek, black sedan pulled into the warehouse, its headlights cutting through the darkness, blinding him. The doors opened, and two massive men in dark tactical gear stepped out, followed by Victoria Hayes. She was a striking woman in her late thirties, dressed in an immaculate cream-colored trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, severe ponytail.
"You're late, Derek," Victoria said, her voice smooth and chillingly devoid of warmth.
"I had to make sure I wasn't followed," Derek stammered, pulling a folder of papers from his coat. "Look, I have it. I have the proof. The insurance claim is filed. Great Southern Assurance is processing the double-indemnity payout. It's twenty million dollars, Victoria! Ten million of it is yours, plus interest."
Victoria stepped forward, taking the folder. She flipped through the papers under the light of a tactical flashlight held by one of her guards.
"This is a claim," she said, her eyes narrowing. "Not cash. My associates don't accept paper promises, Derek. We asked for five million by midnight tonight as a good-faith payment."
"She’s in a coma!" Derek pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. "The doctors say she has zero brain activity! She’s going to die any day now. Once she does, the payout is automatic. I just need forty-eight more hours. Please. You know who her father is—Arthur Matthews. If I try to liquidate any other assets, he’ll notice. This is the only clean way!"
Victoria stared at him for a long, agonizing moment. She handed the folder back to her guard.
"Forty-eight hours, Derek," she whispered, leaning close enough for him to smell her cherry lip balm. "If that money is not in our Cayman account by Monday morning, we won't just come for you. We will find where your precious little wife is sleeping, and we will turn off her machines ourselves to speed up the process. Do we understand each other?"
Derek nodded frantically. "Yes. Yes, thank you, Victoria. I swear, it's a done deal."
As Victoria turned to walk back to her car, the sudden, deafening sound of shattering glass echoed through the warehouse.
"FBI! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!"
Bright searchlights exploded through the high windows, illuminating the warehouse in blinding white light. Dozens of heavily armed FBI tactical officers poured through the entrance, their weapons trained on Victoria, her guards, and Derek.
"Down on the ground! Now!"
Victoria’s guards immediately reached for their holstered firearms, but they were instantly neutralized, pinned to the concrete by a swarm of federal agents. Victoria slowly raised her hands, her face twisting into a mask of pure fury as she looked at Derek.
"You set us up," she hissed.
"No! I swear, I didn't!" Derek screamed, throwing himself onto the dirty floor, weeping in terror. "I don't know what's happening!"

From the shadows of the entrance, Arthur Matthews walked forward, accompanied by the Special Agent in Charge. Arthur looked down at Derek, his face devoid of any emotion.
"You're right, Derek. You don't know what's happening," Arthur said calmly. "But you’re about to find out."
