Chapter 2 - The Sound of the ClickThe interior of the Mercer estate master suite was designed to project wealth in every square inch—hand-carved mahogany moldings, silk-lined wallpaper imported from Milan, and heavy velvet drapes that blocked out the rest of the world. But wealth, Chloe knew, often bred complacency.

The lock on the master bedroom door was a high-end commercial grade deadbolt, but it was installed by residential contractors who relied on standard pin-tumbler alignments rather than high-security magnetic seals.

The second pin fell into place with a subtle vibration against her knuckles.

Chloe’s breathing was slow and rhythmic. Her mind wasn't on the humiliation downstairs; it was entirely consumed by the geometry of the mechanism inside the brass cylinder. For months, while Derek had wooed her with candlelit dinners and grand promises of a unified future, she had been quietly living a double life. While he talked about merging their lives, she had been auditing his financial footprint, uncovering the hidden debt liabilities beneath Mercer Holdings, and discovering the precise legal mechanisms he intended to use to swallow Aether Systems whole.

The marriage certificate they had signed at St. Jude’s Cathedral wasn't just a union of hearts; it was a Trojan horse. Derek had used her emotional vulnerability—still raw from the passing of her father—to rush the marriage timeline, bypassing standard prenuptial reviews under the guise of "simplifying their estate planning."

What he didn't know was that the marriage certificate itself contained a ridership clause drafted by a federal corporate attorney who happened to be Chloe’s godfather. A clause stating that if any material misrepresentation of asset consolidation occurred within forty-eight hours of execution, the marital contract became voidable at the sole discretion of the injured party, with full punitive restitution drawn from the primary guarantor’s personal liquid reserves.

And the primary guarantor was Derek Mercer.

The final pin cleared the shear line. The tension wrench turned effortlessly, and the heavy brass bolt slid back into the door frame with a soft, satisfying snap.

Chloe didn't open the door immediately. She stood up, brushed her knees, and checked her reflection in the full-length gilded mirror by the wardrobe. Her hair was still pinned up in the intricate bridal updo, held in place by thirty-two jeweled bobby pins. Her ivory silk dress, though slightly stained at the hem from the patio grass, still clung to her frame with elegant precision.

She looked like a devastated, trapped bride.

She pulled a small, heavy bottle of designer perfume from her vanity tray, sprayed a fine mist of alcohol-based fragrance into the air, and dabbed a tiny drop of artificial tear gel beneath her left eye. Perfection.

Stepping out into the hallway, she moved with silent, feline grace. The second-floor landing overlooked the grand foyer and the open-concept dining room below. The air was thick with the scent of roasted meats, expensive wine, and smug self-satisfaction.

She heard Derek’s voice booming over the chatter.

"...you have to break them in early," Derek was saying, his tone dripping with patronizing amusement. "Give an inch, and they think they run the estate. My mother was right—a little tough love on day one saves you ten years of headache."

Laughter rippled through the gathered relatives. Brenda’s voice chimed in, sharp and triumphant. "She’s upstairs sulking, no doubt. Good. Let her think about what happens when she disrespects this family."

Chloe didn't walk down the grand staircase. Instead, she glided down the service stairs at the rear of the west wing—stairways built for domestic staff, hidden behind unassuming white doors that the Mercer family rarely acknowledged.

Her destination wasn't the front door.

It was Derek’s private home office on the ground floor.

The room where he kept his physical safe, his hard-copy financial ledgers, and, most importantly, the master server hub for Mercer Holdings' local network infrastructure.

If she was going to dismantle his empire, she wasn't just going to walk away with her forty-five thousand dollars. She was going to leave him completely naked in the digital dark.
