Chapter 3 - The Digital GhostDerek’s private office smelled of aged leather, expensive bourbon, and unbridled arrogance. The walls were lined with dark oak bookshelves filled with unread leather-bound classics and framed photographs of Derek shaking hands with local politicians and real estate tycoons.

The room was dark, illuminated only by the faint blue glow of a multi-monitor desktop setup resting on an oversized mahogany executive desk.
Chloe slipped inside, closing the heavy oak door behind her without a sound. She didn't turn on the overhead lights. Instead, she walked straight to the desk, pulled her encrypted flash drive from her backpack, and plugged it directly into the USB-3 port of Derek’s primary workstation.
The screen blinked, prompting a biometric administrator override.
Derek thought he was a genius for securing his files with facial recognition and fingerprint scanners. But he didn't know that three weeks ago, while they were testing their wedding registry tablet on this very computer, Chloe had installed a hardware-level keylogger disguised as a USB charging hub.
She typed a twelve-character master bypass command into the terminal window.
Access Granted: Welcome, Administrator.
The entire financial architecture of Mercer Holdings opened before her eyes like a dissected specimen.
For the next twenty minutes, Chloe worked with terrifying speed. She wasn't just copying files; she was executing a pre-programmed script—a digital executioner she had spent months writing with the help of federal cybersecurity experts who had been trying to build a fraud case against Mercer Holdings for over two years.
First, she severed the ownership transfer pipeline for Aether Systems. With a few keystrokes, the patent assignments reverted back to her late father’s estate trust, locked behind an impenetrable federal receivership that Derek’s corporate lawyers wouldn't be able to touch even with a court order.
Second, she initiated an automated asset freeze across all thirty-four of Derek’s subsidiary LLCs. Using his own administrative credentials, she triggered a compliance audit from the Securities and Exchange Commission, flagging multiple instances of inflated property valuations and illicit municipal kickbacks.
Third—and most satisfyingly—she transferred the exact $45,000 cashier's check amount, multiplied by a hundredfold in punitive damages stipulated by their marriage contract's penal clause, directly from Derek’s primary personal liquidity account into an offshore humanitarian trust bearing her mother’s maiden name.
The progress bar on the screen ticked upward: 99%... 100% Complete.
A small dialog box popped up in the center of the screen: All actions executed successfully. System integrity locked. Administrator lockout initiated.
Chloe pulled the flash drive from the port, slipped it into her pocket, and turned toward the door.
As her hand touched the brass handle, she heard the heavy footsteps approaching down the hallway.
"Derek? Are you in here? I thought I heard a noise," a woman’s voice called out—Brenda.
Panic? No. Chloe felt a sudden, electric surge of adrenaline.
She didn't try to hide behind the desk. Instead, she stepped directly into the path of the opening door, her face settling into an expression of profound, fragile vulnerability.
The door swung open, and Brenda’s sharp, painted face appeared in the gap, framed by diamond-encrusted earrings that caught the dim light.
Brenda froze, her eyes widening in shock as she took in Chloe standing calmly in her son’s private sanctum.
"What... what are you doing in here?" Brenda sputtered, her voice rising in sudden alarm. "You were supposed to be locked upstairs! Derek said—"
"Derek said a lot of things, Brenda," Chloe interrupted. Her voice wasn't shaking. It was ice-cold, carrying a quiet authority that made the older woman instantly step back.
Brenda’s jaw tightened. "Listen to me, you little ungrateful—"

"Save it," Chloe whispered, stepping past her mother-in-law with the slow, deliberate grace of a queen walking through a conquered province. "Tell my husband his wedding gift is already processed."
Without waiting for a reply, Chloe walked out of the office, down the private corridor, and straight toward the grand arched front doors of the Mercer estate.
