Chapter 5 - The Master of the House

The morning after the siege brought a crisp, crystal-clear autumn day over the Hudson Valley.

The broken stone pillars at the outer gate were already being cleared by a team of stone masons, while the courtyard had been scrubbed clean until no trace of the night's battle remained.

Inside the sunny dining room of the manor, the table was loaded with fresh croissants, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and a large bowl of fresh fruit prepared by Dolores.

Sophie was sitting on a booster seat, happily spreading strawberry jam over a piece of toast, her legs swinging above the floor. Sitting beside her, wearing a simple navy wool sweater with his sleeves rolled up, was Dante Corsetti.

He was holding a small silver spoon, carefully cutting a piece of pancake for the six-year-old girl.

"More syrup, please!" Sophie demanded happily, pointing her fork at the bottle.

"Two drops only," Dante bargained gently, pouring the syrup with extreme precision. "Or your mother will make us both do push-ups in the garden."

Sophie giggled loudly, clapping her small hands together.

Amelia walked into the dining room carrying a pot of fresh coffee. She stopped in the doorway, her heart swelling with an overwhelming, radiant warmth as she watched the most feared man in New York arguing with a six-year-old over pancake syrup.

Dante looked up. His silver eyes met hers, and a soft, genuine smile—a smile he hadn't worn in twenty-three years—touched his lips.

"Good morning, Amelia," Dante said softly.

"Good morning," Amelia smiled, walking over to pour coffee into his cup.

After breakfast, as Sophie ran out into the garden with Dolores to feed the ducks, Dante led Amelia down the long corridor of the west wing.

He stopped before a pair of tall white doors that had remained locked since they arrived.

"I had my legal team finish the paperwork yesterday," Dante said, pulling a small silver key from his pocket and handing it to her.

Amelia frowned playfully. "More paperwork? Dante, you've already bought out my lease in Brooklyn and paid off my father's old medical bills."

"This is different," Dante said gently. "Open it."

Amelia inserted the key into the lock and turned it. The doors swung open smoothly.

Inside was a breathtaking, sunlit studio space. Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the lake and the pine forests. The room was equipped with professional cooking stations, state-of-the-art marble counters, commercial ovens, and a dining area decorated with warm wood and fresh flowers.

Above the central archway, carved in beautiful gold lettering, were the words: Russo’s & Ward: Kitchen of the Valley.

Amelia gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, tears instantly filling her eyes. "Dante... what is this?"

"Connie Russo wanted to retire," Dante explained, stepping up behind her, wrapping his strong arms gently around her waist. "I bought the rights to the restaurant, hired her as a senior consultant, and built this facility for you. It's a culinary school and shelter foundation for women who need a second chance—run entirely by you."

Amelia turned around in his arms, tears streaming down her cheeks, her hands resting against his chest. "I don't know what to say... I can't accept this..."

"You already paid for it, Amelia," Dante whispered, leaning down, his forehead resting against hers. "Three days ago, your daughter paid for it with a tin box of coins and a plate of marinara."

Amelia looked up into his eyes, her heart overflowing with love. She reached up, cupping his face, and pulled him down into a soft, deep, lingering kiss that sealed their lives together forever.
