Chapter 6 - The Feast of the Heart

Five Years Later

The sun was setting over the Hudson Valley, casting a warm, golden glow across the rolling hills, the sparkling lake, and the grand stone manor.

The heavy wrought-iron gates of the Corsetti estate stood wide open. Bright yellow roses and lush green ivy completely covered the stone pillars, transforming the once-intimidating entrance into a welcoming, breathtaking archway.

Inside the grand dining hall of the manor, long wooden tables were set for fifty guests.

Former staff, local families, rescued women from the shelter foundation, and friends from Brooklyn gathered around the fire, their voices and laughter filling the high-ceilinged room with joy. Connie Russo sat at the head of the kitchen table, wearing her favorite floral apron, drinking wine and laughing with Dolores.

Standing near the main doors, wearing a tailored dark suit, was eleven-year-old Sophie. She was taller now, her blue eyes bright with intelligence, a silver necklace with a small heart charm resting against her velvet dress.

"Attention, everyone!" Sophie called out loudly, holding a spoon against her juice glass.

The room quieted down, everyone turning their attention toward the head of the room.

Amelia stood beside the grand fireplace. She wore a stunning emerald green dress, her dark hair styled in soft waves, looking radiant, confident, and completely transformed.

Beside her, holding her hand tightly, stood thirty-eight-year-old Dante Corsetti.

He wore an dark gray suit, his dark hair streaked with silver at the temples, his silver eyes filled with deep, undeniable peace.

"Five years ago," Sophie spoke proudly, stepping up beside Dante, "I spent ninety-five cents from my piggy bank to buy a plate of spaghetti for a man sitting alone on a patio."

The crowd let out a warm, affectionate laugh.

"I thought he was just hungry," Sophie continued, looking up at Dante with pure love. "I didn't know he was going to become my dad."

Dante’s eyes glistened with rare tears. He dropped to one knee, wrapping his arms around eleven-year-old Sophie, hugging her tightly against his chest before standing back up to look at the room.

"When I sat on that patio five years ago," Dante said, his deep voice echoing warmly across the hall, "I thought my life was over. I thought I was just a ghost keeping watch over an empty kingdom."

He turned, looking directly into Amelia’s eyes, holding her hand against his heart.

"Then a little girl brought me a plate of food made with love," Dante whispered softly. "And her mother showed me that the strongest thing a man can ever do is open his heart to a family."

Dante raised his glass of red wine high.

"To love, to family, and to second chances!" Dante declared.

"To family!" the crowd cheered in unison, raising their glasses into the golden light.

As the music began and guests moved out onto the sunlit patio to dance, Dante pulled Amelia close to his side, leading her out toward the quiet garden near the lake.

The evening wind was gentle, carrying the smell of pine trees and fresh basil from the kitchen garden.

Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, exquisite silver box. He opened it, revealing a stunning sapphire engagement ring encircled by brilliant white diamonds.

"Amelia Ward," Dante murmured softly, his voice rich with emotion as he looked into her eyes under the starlight. "Will you make this home yours forever?"

Amelia looked at the ring, then up into the face of the man who had protected her, cherished her, and loved her daughter as his own.

"It was always ours, Dante," Amelia whispered softly, smiling through her tears. "Yes. A thousand times yes."

He slipped the ring onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her deeply under the silver light of the moon.

Far across the courtyard, the lights of the manor shone brightly through the dark pine trees—a beacon of warmth, hope, and love that would never go dark again.
