Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Name

The revelation hung in the sterile air of the waiting room like a shroud. Mara pulled Ethan aside, her face taut with the gravity of what she had just learned.
"Derek Voss isn't just a deadbeat father," she whispered, keeping her eyes on Sadie. "He has a history of erratic behavior, accusations of financial exploitation, and he’s been aggressively pursuing custody of Emma since Claire passed. But there’s a catch, Ethan. He’s been linked to an investment firm that has been trying to acquire smaller medical clinics for asset stripping. It sounds like he’s looking for leverage—and a baby can be leverage in ways that defy human decency."
Ethan felt the familiar steel of his CEO persona hardening. This wasn’t just a medical crisis anymore; this was a corporate and legal war. He thought back to the name: Claire Brooks. The name didn't ring a bell immediately, but as he closed his eyes, a memory surfaced—a charity event three years ago, a woman at a local clinic who had written him a letter about the broken software at her facility. She had thanked him for a small scholarship grant his company had provided, but she had also included a note about "the future of children being lost in the cracks."
He had ignored it. He had sent an automated thank-you note and moved on to the next acquisition.
"She kept my name," Ethan muttered, looking at the bent metro card in Sadie’s small, shaking hand. "She kept it because she knew."
"She didn't just keep it," Mara said, looking over at Sadie. "Sadie, honey? Can you tell Mr. Cole why your mama told you to find him?"
May you like
Sadie lifted her head. Her brown eyes were unnervingly old. "Mama said you were the one who bought the clinic. She said Derek was stealing from the patients’ trust funds, and he needed Emma to get to the money. She said you were the only one who had the codes to stop him."
The room went cold. Ethan realized in a flash of terrifying clarity that this wasn't about a child. This was about a secret encrypted within the medical software architecture of a clinic he had acquired—a secret that Derek Voss was willing to burn the world down to access.
