The custody hearing was a circus of media attention. Derek Voss had hired a high-profile attorney, spinning a narrative that Ethan Cole was a wealthy elitist kidnapping orphaned children.
But Ethan had an ace in the hole.
He had spent his fortune not on luxury, but on forensic accounting. He presented a mountain of evidence: the drained trust funds, the threats Claire had documented, and, most damningly, the digital fingerprints left by Derek when he tried to hack the clinic’s server the night Emma was admitted.
"Your Honor," Ethan said, standing in the courtroom, his voice steady. "I do not seek to own these children. I seek to protect their future. I am not a father, but I am a man who has learned that wealth is meaningless if you don't use it to shield the vulnerable. I am prepared to create an irrevocable trust for Sadie and Emma that is managed by an independent third party, ensuring their education and safety regardless of what happens to me."
The judge looked at the evidence, then at Sadie, who sat bravely in the gallery, clutching her stuffed bunny.

"Mr. Voss," the judge said, his voice echoing. "The court finds your testimony not only inconsistent but malicious. You are hereby stripped of all paternal rights. Mr. Cole, I will grant you temporary guardianship, with a full review in six months for permanent placement."
As the gavel fell, the courtroom erupted. Derek stormed out, but he looked small, beaten, and utterly irrelevant.
