Chapter 4 - The Fragile Bridge

Days turned into a blur of legal depositions and hospital visits. Ethan, for the first time in his life, found himself leaving his office at 3:00 PM to bring coloring books, warm meals, and stories to a hospital room.

Sadie was the hardest to reach. She was a child who had learned that trusting adults was a liability. She watched Ethan with suspicious, searching eyes.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked one evening, while Emma slept.

Ethan sat on the floor, abandoning his chair. "Because your mom was right. I ignored the problems of the world for a long time. I thought if I stayed at the top, I wouldn't have to deal with the mess. Your mom forced me to look down."

Sadie looked at her hands. "Mama said you were the one who made the machines that save people. She said you forgot how to be a person while doing it."

Ethan flinched. The honesty stung, but it was exactly what he needed. "She was right about that, too. I’m trying to remember."

Slowly, the wall between them began to crack. Sadie started to ask about his job, not in terms of money, but in terms of how he helped people. He showed her the code on his tablet, and she watched, fascinated, as he explained how software could make a nurse’s job easier, which in turn kept babies like Emma safer.

For the first time, Ethan felt like his work had a soul.
