Chapter 2 - The Storm Outside and the Monster Within

By 3:00 a.m., the mountain blizzard reached its terrifying peak. Winds screamed against the reinforced glass walls of Nathan’s estate at eighty miles per hour, knocking out the main power grid. The estate's heavy industrial backup generators roared to life instantly, keeping the lights, radiant floor heat, and medical equipment running without interruption.

In the master guest suite, Dr. Nathan Pierce had converted the room into a high-level pediatric ICU ward. Using the emergency medical supplies he kept at home for high-profile private patients, he had administered warm IV fluids to Lily and monitored the twins' oxygen levels with portable pulse oximeters.

Owen and Ethan, barely six months old, were finally sleeping peacefully in a heated double bassinet, their tiny cheeks returning to a healthy, rosy pink. Lily was tucked under a plush down duvet on the king-sized bed, holding a warm cup of milk with both hands, refusing to close her eyes for more than two minutes at a time.

Every time the wind howled or a tree branch scraped against the window glass, Lily flinched violently, spilling her milk, her green eyes wide with absolute terror.

"He's coming," she whimpered, her teeth clicking together. "Daddy is coming. He told Mommy he would track us in the snow. He said if we ran, he’d break my legs."

Nathan sat on the edge of the mattress, pulling the tiny girl into his arms. He held her close, letting her feel the solid, steady beat of his heart.

"Listen to me, Lily," Nathan said, his voice dead calm, grounded, and immovable as a mountain. "Your father cannot get into this house. These doors are solid steel. These windows are bulletproof glass. And I have four armed security guards posted at the perimeter gates. He will never, ever put a hand on you again."

"He hurt Mommy..." Lily wept, burying her face into Nathan’s cashmeresweater. "There was so much blood on her hair, Uncle Nathan. She didn't move after he hit her."

Nathan felt a sharp, suffocating pain in his chest. "Where was the cabin, Lily? Do you know where you were living?"

"In the old logging woods," Lily whispered. "Near the rusted red water tower. Mommy called it Blackwood Ridge."

Nathan’s eyes narrowed. Blackwood Ridge was a dense, abandoned forestry area only seven miles down the mountain pass.

He pulled his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket and dialed Chief Inspector David Vance, a long-time personal friend and head of the Washington State Special Investigations Unit.

"Nathan?" Vance’s deep voice crackled over the speaker. "I got a automated ping from your estate's emergency system. Is everything okay up there?"

"David, I need an immediate tactical SWAT dispatch to the old logging cabin near the red water tower on Blackwood Ridge," Nathan said, his tone dripping with lethal urgency. "My sister, Sarah Carter, has been subjected to severe domestic abuse and aggravated assault by Marcus Kane. She may be critically injured or dead at the scene. And Marcus is likely armed, dangerous, and hunting three children who are currently safe at my house."

There was a sudden, sharp intake of breath on the line. "Marcus Kane? Nathan, we've had a federal warrant out for Kane for eight months! He’s tied to an illegal human trafficking and high-stakes extortion ring operating out of Seattle!"

"I don't care about his warrants, David," Nathan growled quietly. "Get a snowcat unit to that cabin right now. If my sister is still breathing, get her to St. Jude’s Trauma Center under my personal name. Use my private medical helicopter if the roads are blocked."

"I'm moving the team right now," Vance promised. "Keep your estate on total lockdown, Nathan. Kane is a desperate animal."

Nathan ended the call and looked at Lily. She had finally succumbed to exhaustion, her eyelids drooping as she curled into a tiny ball under the heavy duvet, holding her mother's silver bracelet tightly in her sleep.

Suddenly, the estate’s outer security alarm hummed quietly.

On the master control panel mounted on the wall, a red light began to flash rhythmically.

Zone 1 Perimeter Gate: Motion Detected. Zone 1 Perimeter Gate: Manual Force Breach Attempt.

Nathan stood up slowly. He walked over to the nightstand, unlocked a concealed biometric safe, and pulled out a sleek, matte-black Sig Sauer 9mm pistol. He checked the magazine, chambered a round with a metallic click, and turned to Rosa, who was standing in the doorway with a wide-eyed expression.

"Lock this bedroom door from the inside, Rosa," Nathan instructed softly, his face an unreadable mask of cold steel. "Do not open it for anyone except me."

"Dr. Pierce... please be careful!" Rosa whispered.

Nathan walked down the grand marble staircase toward the floor-to-ceiling glass atrium of his front entrance. Through the swirling white blizzard outside, he could see the silhouette of a heavy 4x4 pickup truck rammed directly into his wrought-iron security gates.
