Chapter 4 - The Battle in the Intensive Care Unit

Twenty-four hours later, the snowstorm had finally passed, leaving the Cascade Mountains draped in a brilliant, blinding blanket of fresh white snow under a clear blue winter sky.

At St. Jude’s Trauma Center in downtown Seattle, the entire ninth-floor Intensive Care Unit was placed under maximum private security. Dr. Nathan Pierce had paid out-of-pocket to clear the entire wing, posting private security guards at every elevator bank and entrance.

Inside Room 904, Sarah Carter lay in a medically induced coma. Her head was wrapped in white surgical bandages, an IV line fed antibiotics and painkillers into her arm, and a ventilator hummed softly beside her bed.

Nathan sat in a leather chair beside her, holding her thin, bruised hand.

On the couch across the room, Lily was sitting quietly, wearing a warm pink sweater, holding a plush teddy bear Nathan had bought her from the hospital gift shop. Owen and Ethan were resting comfortably in two mobile hospital cribs nearby, fed and healthy.

The door to the ICU room opened quietly, and Arthur Montgomery, Nathan’s chief legal counsel and one of the premier family law attorneys in the state, walked in carrying a thick leather briefcase.

"Nathan," Arthur whispered, stepping closer to the bed. "We have a situation with the county prosecutor's office and Marcus Kane’s legal team."

Nathan didn't take his eyes off his sister's face. "What kind of situation?"

"Marcus Kane’s public defender is attempting to claim that the evidence gathered at the cabin was obtained through an illegal search," Arthur explained, his brow furrowed. "Furthermore, Marcus’s wealthy uncle—Julian Kane, the real estate developer—has hired a high-powered defense firm. They are filing an emergency petition for temporary custody of Lily, Owen, and Ethan, claiming that as the paternal grand-uncle, he has a legal right to the children while Sarah is incapacitated."

Nathan turned his head slowly, his green eyes burning with a dark, dangerous fire.

"Julian Kane wants my sister's children?" Nathan asked softly.

"Julian knows that Sarah’s trust fund—the one established by your late parents—is worth twelve million dollars," Arthur revealed. "The trust explicitly states that if Sarah is incapacitated, control of the trust payouts goes to the legal guardian of her surviving children. Julian and Marcus are trying to seize control of the children so they can bleed the Pierce family trust dry to pay off Marcus's cartel debts."

Nathan stood up slowly. He adjusted the cuffs of his white lab coat, looking at Arthur with absolute, unwavering resolve.

"Schedule an emergency custody hearing in King County Family Court for tomorrow morning," Nathan commanded. "And call the board of directors at First National Bank. I want every asset, mortgage, and credit line associated with Julian Kane’s real estate firm audited and frozen by 5:00 PM today."

Arthur smiled faintly. "You're going to buy out his debt?"

"I'm going to destroy him financially, legally, and socially before sunrise," Nathan said coldly. "Nobody plays games with my family ever again."

That evening at 8:00 p.m., as the quiet hum of the ICU machines filled the room, Sarah’s fingers twitched gently against Nathan’s palm.

Nathan instantly leaned forward. "Sarah? Sarah, can you hear me?"

Sarah’s long eyelashes fluttered open slowly. Her vision was blurry, her breathing shallow beneath the oxygen mask. She looked around the white room, her eyes panicked, searching frantically.

"My... my babies..." she rasped weakly through her dry throat. "Lily... Owen..."

"Shh... stay calm, Sarah," Nathan whispered gently, tears filling his eyes as he smoothed back her hair. "Look over there. Look at the couch."

Sarah turned her head painfully toward the side of the room.

Lily stood up from the couch, clutching her teddy bear, her big green eyes shining with joy. She walked over to the bed on tiptoe, reaching up to gently touch her mother’s hand.

"Mommy," Lily whispered, a beautiful, brilliant smile lighting up her little face. "We made it. Uncle Nathan’s house was so big... and he fixed everything."

Sarah closed her eyes as tears streamed down her temples into her bandages. She squeezed Nathan’s hand with all the remaining strength she possessed.

"Nathan..." Sarah sobbed silently. "I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry for leaving..."

"Don't you ever apologize, Sarah," Nathan wept, pressing his forehead against her trembling hand. "I was the arrogant one. I failed you seven years ago. But I promise you... I will spend the rest of my life making sure you and your children are safe, loved, and protected."
