Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at the Glass Mansion

Nathan stood inside the heated, brightly lit foyer of his glass estate, watching the figure approach through the storm.
Marcus Kane looked worse than a wild animal. His face was weathered and bearded, his clothes reeked of stale whiskey and gunpowder, and his eyes were wild with a frantic, unhinged rage. He had a bandage wrapped hastily around his knuckles, and fresh bloodstains were visible on the cuffs of his heavy jacket.
Marcus reached the front porchâthe very porch where Lily had collapsed hours earlierâand slammed the heavy iron end of his crowbar against the thick, reinforced glass door.
BOOM!
The glass didn't crack. It resonated with a dull, low thud.
"Pierce!" Marcus roared, his voice muffled by the thick double-paned glass and the howling wind. "Open this goddamn door, you arrogant bastard! I know theyâre in there! Give me my kids!"
Nathan didn't flinch. He walked forward until he was standing just inches away from the glass, separated from the monster by three inches of bulletproof composite material. He held the Sig Sauer resting at his side.
"You're trespassing, Marcus," Nathan said quietly, his voice amplified through the porch intercom system. "And you have about three minutes before the state police swarm this mountain."
Marcus let out a cruel, maniacal laugh, spitting a mouthful of dark blood onto the pristine white snow of the porch.
"The state police?!" Marcus sneered, banging the rifle butt against the doorframe. "The roads are blocked by ten feet of snow, Doctor! Nobody is coming up this hill! Sarah thought she was smart sending that little brat through the storm! But those babies are my property! I have a buyer waiting in Vancouver whoâs paying half a million dollars for a matched set of healthy twins! You think Iâm gonna let your fancy medical ass ruin my payday?!"
Hearing Marcus refer to tiny Owen and Ethan as "property" to be sold to cartels sent a wave of icy fury straight into Nathanâs veins.
"Sarah is dead, Pierce!" Marcus taunted, leaning his blood-streaked face against the glass, grinning with yellowed teeth. "I cracked her skull wide open on the kitchen floor! Sheâs frozen solid by now! You saved her brat, but you couldn't save her! Just like you couldn't save your parents when they died! You're nothing but a coward in a expensive suit!"
Nathan raised the handgun, pointing the barrel straight at the bridge of Marcus Kaneâs nose through the glass.
Marcus stopped laughing. His eyes widened slightly as he stared into the barrel of the gun, and then into Nathanâs eyes.
Nathanâs eyes were not those of a wealthy, soft-handed surgeon. They were the eyes of a man who spent his life standing over open chests, holding life and death between his fingers, completely unafraid of blood.
"If you strike that glass one more time, Marcus," Nathan said softly over the intercom, his tone smooth and terrifyingly calm, "I will open this door. And I promise you, as a surgeon, I know every single nerve, artery, and bone in the human body that causes maximum agony without killing you instantly. You will spend the next forty minutes begging me to pull the trigger before the police arrive."
Marcus swallowed hard. For the first time, he saw the lethal reality behind Nathan Pierce's refined exterior. This was a man with forty million dollars, unlimited legal power, and a burning desire to avenge his sister.
Suddenly, the roaring sound of heavy engines echoed through the mountain pass behind Marcus's truck.
Bright blue and red strobe lights illuminated the swirling white blizzard. Two heavy-duty armored police snowcats, followed by an emergency medical transport vehicle, breached the broken perimeter gates, throwing up sprays of snow as they slid to a halt across the driveway.
"STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP THE RIFLE NOW!" high-powered megaphones bellowed through the storm.
Ten heavily armed SWAT officers in winter camouflage deployed from the snowcats, their tactical laser sights painting Marcus Kaneâs chest with glowing red dots.
Marcus panicked. He dropped his crowbar, raised the hunting rifle toward the police, and fired a wild shot into the storm.
SNIPER FIRE!
A single, suppressed gunshot echoed from the lead snowcat.
A high-velocity rubber-coated breaching slug struck Marcus directly in the knee. He screamed in agony, his leg buckling instantly as he collapsed onto the icy porch, his rifle clattering across the stone steps. Within seconds, four SWAT officers tackled him into the snow, slamming his face against the frozen ground, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Chief Inspector David Vance marched up the steps, his tactical boots crunching on the ice. He nodded at Nathan through the glass.
Nathan unlocked the heavy steel door and stepped out onto the cold porch, looking down at the groaning, bleeding monster pinned to the stone floor.
"Is Sarah...?" Nathan couldn't even finish the question, his voice choking in his throat.
Vance placed a warm, heavy hand on Nathanâs shoulder. "She's alive, Nathan. Barely. The snowcat team found her at the cabin. She had severe head trauma and hypothermia, but she was still breathing. She's currently in the medical snowcat being stabilized by flight medics. We're flying her straight to St. Judeâs Hospital as soon as the weather clears at dawn."

Nathan closed his eyes, dropping his head as a long, shuddering sigh of relief escaped his lungs.
"Thank God," Nathan whispered. "Thank God."
