Chapter 2 - The Wax Seal and the Ledger

Megan’s legs trembled so violently she could barely find her footing.

As she pushed herself up from the marble floor, hands clutching the dark wood of the table for support, she looked at the two men.

Rick was squirming on top of the dark walnut finish, his eyes bulging, hands tearing fruitlessly at Lucian’s iron grip. Lucian Sterling didn't even look winded. He held Rick down with one hand while standing upright, his expression as impassive as a judge pronouncing a death sentence.

The side door opened, and Valentina stepped back into the room, two heavy-set security guards in dark suits trailing behind her.

"Lucian," Valentina said calmly, inspecting her manicured nails. "The floor was recently polished. Try not to make a mess."

"Take him," Lucian ordered, releasing Rick’s throat.

Rick fell onto the table, coughing violently, gasping for air as he rolled off the edge and hit the floor in a heap. The two guards grabbed Rick by his shoulders, hauling him to his feet.

"Mr. Sterling! Please!" Rick choked out, blood trickling from his lip where it had struck a glass stem. "We had a deal! I gave you the paper! The land rights!"

Lucian reached into his inner breast pocket, pulled out a linen handkerchief, and slowly wiped his hands. He stepped around the table, putting himself directly between Rick and Megan.

"Our deal is void, Richard," Lucian said, his voice flat. "You came into my home offering collateral you didn't own, boasting about abusing a woman who showed more courage crawling into my shadows than you have shown in your entire pathetic life."

"You can't do this!" Rick screamed as the guards dragged him toward the door. "Charles Croft owns those rights! If I don't give him the girl, he’ll kill me!"

Lucian’s gray eyes narrowed slightly. "Then I suggest you start running."

With a sharp wave of Lucian’s hand, the guards shoved Rick through the heavy doors, slamming them shut. The echoes of Rick’s panicked screams faded down the long hallway until silence reclaimed the mansion.

Megan stood frozen near the head of the table. Her breath came in shallow, panicked hitches. She looked at Lucian, then at Valentina, then at the vast, luxurious room that suddenly felt like a beautifully decorated gilded cage.

"I... I have to go," Megan stammered, backing away toward the terrace doors. "I’m sorry for trespassing. I didn't mean to—I hid in the back of his truck, and when he parked in your courtyard, I ran through the service door—"

"Megan," Lucian said gently, turning to face her completely.

He took three slow, deliberate steps toward her. Megan flinched, her shoulders instinctively pulling inward—a reflex honed by four years of Rick’s harsh words and sudden hand movements.

Lucian stopped instantly. He noted the flinch, a dark flash of pain crossing his features before he smoothed his expression back into calm stone. He kept a respectful four feet of distance between them.

"You are not trespassing," Lucian said. "And you are not in danger here."

"You don't understand," Megan whispered, her voice cracking. "Rick was right about one thing. Charles Croft is looking for me. This paper..."

Her hands trembled as she reached inside her sweater, pulling out the folded, yellowed piece of paper she had carried pressed against her skin for three weeks. She held it out with a shaking arm.

Lucian stepped forward and took the paper softly, his long fingers brushing against hers. A strange, warm spark flared where his skin touched hers, making Megan’s breath catch in her throat.

Lucian unfolded the sheet.

His eyes swept over the handwritten text, the chilling physical description of Megan, the detailed coordinates of her grandfather’s coastal property in North Bay, and finally—the deep, crimson wax seal stamped at the bottom. The seal depicted a serpent wrapped around a broken dagger.

Valentina stepped up beside Lucian, her calm demeanor vanishing the moment her eyes landed on the red wax.

"The Croft Syndicate crest," Valentina breathed, her voice tight. "Lucian... this isn't just an invoice for land rights."

"No," Lucian agreed, his voice turning to ice as he held the paper up to the light of the chandelier. "Look at the watermarks beneath the ink, Valentina. This isn't a deed. This is a page ripped directly from Charles Croft’s private blackmail ledger."

Megan blinked, confused. "What?"

Lucian turned his gray eyes back to Megan, studying her pale, exhausted face with intense scrutiny.

"Four days before you left him," Lucian said softly, "you found this tucked in Rick's jacket. Am I correct?"

"Yes," Megan whispered.

"Rick didn't write this, Megan. He stole it from Croft. He was using you as a shield. He knew Croft would burn the city to get this paper back, so he tried to dump both you and the document onto my lap to settle his debts and clear his name."

Megan’s knees gave out. She felt the room spin—the sheer, staggering weight of Rick’s betrayal hitting her all at once. He hadn't just mistreated her; he had used her as a walking target to save his own skin.

Before she could hit the marble floor, Lucian’s broad arms caught her.

He didn't pull her tight; he simply supported her weight with iron strength, lifting her effortlessly as if she weighed nothing at all. He carried her over to a long leather sofa near the hearth, laying her down gently against the soft wool cushions.

"Valentina," Lucian commanded over his shoulder as he knelt beside the sofa, his thumb lightly brushing a stray lock of dark hair from Megan’s forehead. "Call Dr. Harrison. Tell him to bring a sedative and a thermal blanket. And lock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Nobody enters."

"And Charles Croft?" Valentina asked from the doorway.

Lucian looked down at Megan, whose dark brown eyes were wide with a mix of exhaustion, shock, and a strange, burgeoning sense of safety she hadn't felt in years.

"Tell Croft," Lucian said, his voice echoing like dark thunder, "that if he wants his ledger back, he will have to come through the front gates of Sterling Manor."
