Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Newport

By midnight, the storm outside Sterling Manor had reached its peak. Rain lashed against the towering stained-glass windows, and wind howled through the coastal pine trees surrounding the thirty-acre estate.

Inside the guest wing on the second floor, Megan sat in a massive velvet armchair beside a crackling fireplace.

She wore a soft, cream-colored cashmere sweater and warm trousers provided by the estate’s housekeeper. A tray of hot tea, toasted bread, and roasted chicken sat untouched on the mahogany side table beside her.

She looked down at her hands. For four years, Rick had told her she was plain, clumsy, useless, and incapable of surviving on her own. “Look at you,” his voice echoed in her mind, poisonous and familiar. “You’re soft, Megan. Nobody else would ever take care of you.”

Yet tonight, the most feared man in Rhode Island had put his own empire on the line to shield her.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," Megan said softly.

The door creaked open, and Lucian stepped into the room. He had removed his suit jacket, wearing only a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong wrists and a dark, intricate tattoo of an eagle sprawling across his left forearm. He carried a silver tray with a fresh pot of chamomile tea.

"You haven't eaten," Lucian observed quietly, setting the tray down beside hers.

"I’m not very hungry," Megan admitted, pulling her knees up to her chest inside the large chair. She looked at him cautiously. "Mr. Sterling... why are you doing this?"

Lucian pulled up a wooden chair across from her, sitting down with the fluid, effortless grace that seemed inherent to every move he made.

"Call me Lucian," he said. He poured a cup of tea, handing it to her. "And I am doing this because I despise bullies. And because you showed more backbone under my dining table tonight than half the men who work for me."

Megan took the cup, the warmth seeping into her cold fingers. "Rick said... he said I was flawed. He said I was small and pathetic."

Lucian’s gray eyes locked onto hers, holding her gaze with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.

"Richard is a parasite who fed on your kindness until he convinced you that your sweetness was weakness," Lucian said, his voice deep and absolute. "Look at me, Megan."

Megan looked up, meeting his stormy gray eyes.

"You survived four years with a monster," Lucian continued softly. "You had the courage to steal his secret, pack your life into trash bags, hide in the back of a truck in the middle of a winter storm, and hold your breath under my table for two hours without making a sound. You are not weak. You are a survivor."

A single tear spilled over Megan’s eyelashes, but this time, it wasn't a tear of fear. It was the crack in the thick wall of shame Rick had built around her heart.

Before Megan could speak, the heavy oak door of the suite slid open. Valentina stood in the hallway, holding a secure satellite phone, her face grave.

"Lucian," Valentina said. "We have a problem. Croft knows."

Lucian stood up slowly, the gentle warmth in his demeanor instantly hardening back into the icy composure of the Sterling Syndicate leader. "How?"

"Rick," Valentina spat with utter contempt. "The fool didn't start running. He went straight to Croft’s compound in South Providence, begging for protection, offering to tell Croft where the ledger page was in exchange for his life."

"Where is Rick now?" Lucian asked coldly.

"Croft put a bullet in his head thirty minutes ago," Valentina replied flatly. "And now Croft is mobilizing his entire southern crew. Three armored vans just left his docks heading toward Newport."

Megan gasped, setting her tea down so fast it splashed over the porcelain rim. "He killed Rick?"

"Rick made his choices, Megan," Lucian said, turning back to her. He reached out, his warm, strong hand coming to rest gently over hers on the armrest. "You don't need to fear Rick anymore. He can never hurt you again."

"But Croft is coming here because of me!" Megan cried out, panic rising in her chest. "I brought this war to your doorstep!"

Lucian smiled—a small, dark, fierce tilt of his lips that radiated pure, unadulterated confidence.

"Megan," Lucian murmured, leaning down until his dark eyes were level with hers. "Croft didn't start a war because of you. Croft gave me an excuse to end a war that has been brewing for five years."

He stood upright, rolling his white sleeves back down and buttoning his cuffs with calm, methodical precision.

"Valentina, arm the gate detail," Lucian ordered as he walked toward the door. "Tell Marco to take the sniper positions on the roof. We welcome Mr. Croft at the front gates."

"Lucian, wait!" Megan called out, standing up from her chair.

Lucian stopped at the threshold, looking back over his shoulder.

May you like

"Please... be careful," Megan whispered, her dark eyes shining in the firelight.

Lucian’s expression softened into something profound and mesmerizing. "Nobody touches what is under my protection, Megan. Stay in this room. By morning, you will be free."
